I'm from the northeast where we've been having sub-zero temperatures for the past week and probably for the next week too. I just bought my 2006 KJ CRD about a month ago from southern PA. Once it started getting colder, i noticed it wasn't starting as easily as i expected. It would often take 4 or 5 tries before it would fire up. Tonight i tried starting it and i couldn't get it to even turn over. It made a single click - almost like what you would hear when your battery is dead. My battery isn't dead though because i did get it to turn over once and it turned over with plenty of power/speed.

Since i know someone will ask - I do wait for the glow plug light to go off (it seems to go off incredibly fast - even before the other ignition lights go off). I've even tried cycling the ingition a few times to allow the glow plug to heat up multiple times. I also have it plugged in on these cold days.

Does anyone have any ideas why i'm having such a hard time getting it started?

A few observations:
- I noticed that my temperature gage never really gets much above 1/4 - 1/3. (I'm thinking maybe i have a bad thermostat?)
- Once it does start, it runs and idles fine.
- Often when i turn the ignition on before starting, the dash displays "low cool"
- There are no engine lights or error codes.
- I checked the fuses and they are all fine.

I'm thinking of replacing the thermostat or the glow plugs, but I thought i'd ask just in case someone had a better idea of what the issue might be.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cold weather kills batteries. Get it tested.
If the battery is good, then all the excessive cranking may have killed the starter.

You might need new glow plugs. Especially if they are the factory original ceramic plugs.

Yes, you need a new thermostat, but get your cold starting problem fixed first.

Low cool means low coolant level. You likely have a leak somewhere.

I think i do still have the original ceramic 7volt plugs. Do you know if there is a way to tell if they have been replaced or what the 5 volt conversion kit looks like when it is installed?


I haven't seen a coolant leak yet, but i'll take a closer look when i get a chance.

When in doubt, just install the 5v plugs. They will work even if you have the 7v system.

Last night I checked IDparts.com and it seems that they are sold out of all their glow plugs.

In the Washington DC area we are having a cold spell too. No subzero but single digits and low teens. What have worked for me, as I have had no access to the outlet for the plug for the block heater at the time, is to turn the ignition on, let the glow plug light cycle, and let the rest of the instrument lights cycle out, them count to 60 (about one minute +/-) and then crank it. It cranks slower than at higher ambient temperature, but usually fires within 5 or 6 cranks. Only once I had a failure and had to repeat the entire process. I tried the several ignitions on and off in the past, but got no better results.
How long do you have the block heater plugged? I I usually let mine over night when I had to go to work the next morning. Now, as I am retired, don't do it.

To determine which glow pugs you have look at the plastic insulator separating the inner element from the shell (you can see this between the hex portion and the plug end which connects to the harness):

White is 7V ceramic.
Red is 5V Metallic.
Black is 7V metallic.

FYI Etecno1 5V metallic have a black insulator also.

Don't bother with the doubt or the 7v plugs, Just go straight to the 5v.
Going into second winter running 5v plugs and 7v original everythingelse.
No failures yet.
Judging from your location, if you don't have inside somewhat heated parking,,, If you buy 7v plugs they will most likely just pi$$ you off.

I ordered IDParts glow plugs before Christmas when it said they were in stock. Sasquatch was out of stock. Couple days latter got an email saying they were back ordered until January 19th...

My temp gauge was only showing 1/4-1/3 even with the radiator blocked off before I replaced my thermostat.

So, they CAN be had, but IMO if you're not stranded, dead-in-the-water, and must have it running ASAP, I'd leave a rain-check order with IDParts or Sasquatch Parts. These are folks that go WAY out of their way to give our little market fantastic service. I figure customer loyalty will help them continue to do that for the near future, anyway.
