Hi Guys Getting a bit concerned here, I have gone to 2 smog places now and neither can obtain Emissions data from my ECM. Their tools connect fine (My ELM27 scan tool also connects fine and I can check DTC and sensor data) but the specific Emissions data can't be obtained by the smog shops. I should be clear that its not an issue of Data Readiness or not, they can't get that far to even see if its ready. As a result they are failing me, but not charging me for it since they couldn't complete the test. The Second shop contacted the CA BAR and told me they said The Liberties have had OBD connection issues, that I should go to the dealer and get reflashed. I found out about recall F31 on this forum but per my VIN#, that reflash had already been done in 2007. In speaking with the dealer over the phone they seem to want to start replacing parts and I have low confidence in them due to prior situations. The car's registration is expired already, but I want to keep the car for another couple of years. Has anyone else had any issues with smog here on the forum and been able to resolve them? Does anyone have any specific knowledgeable dealers or shop they can recommend (In the San Diego or Orange County areas) to look at the car? Thanks |

Were I in your position, I would contact GDE and see if they can identify a reason it won't connect. I doubt F31 has anything to do with it, and since you already have it, having a dealer reflash wouldn't change anything. Unless you have active codes, there's no reason to replace any parts. To my mind, if their smog tool doesn't connect, it should say why. |

Sounds to me, their equipment is bad, not yours! ![]() |

Just closing this thread out in case anyone searches in the future - issue resolved. I went to the smog ref and he was able to connect/pass my car without issue. He speculated that the previous smog shops unknowingly tried to run the car as a California vehicle and not a federal vehicle and that would have caused them issues. Not sure, just glad its over. |

I thought CA didn't have emissions requirements for diesel vehicles? Do they just connect up or what? |

Sounds like a bunch of DA's at the inspection stations not knowing how to use their own equipment, scary? ![]() Makes one wonder how many others they have turned down due to their incompetence! ![]() |

For smog, all that is required is visual inspection, no smoke from tailpipe when they rev it up, no CEL, and emissions readiness via the ECU. Some smog shops haven't ever seen these, don't know what to do apparently. |
