Post subject: | Factory Navigation System |
Buying my 1st CRD in couple of days and am interested in opinions on the factory navigation system that can be purchased. Is it functional? Does it mess up lay out of dash? Does it combine multiple functions? Radio/CD/Sat radio/ Any links to pics? Thanks, WWV |

I've seen them for sale at this webstore: www.jparts.com Looks like they are $1000 to $1200 and they simply replace the head unit. My guess is that you would have to run some type of antenna or something, but I dno't know. Maybe you should consider a tomtom or a small garmin winshield mounted unit. You could probably place it closer to you and have better/safer view of it and not have to look all the way down at a little 5" screen on your stereo. They are cheaper too and you can always take it out and move it from car to car. Just a thought. |

I bought one (RB1) and installed it. It integrates perfectly with the steering radio controls, works beautifully. Wonder how I did without it. It includes an antenna kit which mount on the top of the dash gauge cluster - you remove the instrument cowling and install the antenna and run the wire down to the Nav. Takes about 1 hour tops to install. |

RB1 uses DVD and has better map resolution. RB4 has less map detail, but can play cd's while running NAV iirc. I just added a 6 CD changer and went with RB1. |

I can only speak to the RB4 which is turn based only. It will show you your coordinates, but you cannot enter a way point and have it direct you there. These nav units are basically for street use. The RB1 unit is supposed to have a "bread crumb" feature that will keep track of your path off of known map areas, so that you can easily back track. If you're really looking for a good off-road unit, I would recommend a Garmin, or Lowrence handheld with appropriate TOPO software. It will be less expensive and more effective. As far as everything else. The RB1 and RB4 integrate seemlessly to the dash and look great. The RB4 has slightly more power for the stereo, but does not provide song title info for Sirius with the RB1. The big difference is the price. Look at ebay and there are some good deals. I purchased by RB4 for $400 with the latest software at the time. There has sence been and update released so whether to buy from the dealer or ebay make sure that you have the absolute latest software. |
