So the turbo on my CRD exploded last week. The mechanic got a new one but now the engine won’t start. He says there’s no compression and since the turbo was in such bad shape he thinks something like the valves are bent or maybe some shards got pulled in.

Is there an off chance that this is some weird diesel specific thing I should have him look at before I go and scrap it?

Shards got past the CAC? I doubt that.

Maybe a timing problem caused bent valve.

I would not scrap it without pulling the head, but if you are not able to do this, you are at the mercy of a mechanic, that may not know very much more than you do.

Yeah that doesn’t sound too good. If piece did go through the intake the CAC would catch anything larger than probably an 1/8th inch.

Was this the stock turbo?

Yes. No mods at all since I’ve always lived in emissions testing areas.

Did the mechanic actually do a compression test?
Did he record the pressures of each cylinder?

1. Not every mechanic has the tools to do a compression check on this engine.
2. Some mechanics are just lazy and don’t know how to properly diagnose engine problems.

I suspect a fuel system problem.
Check for air in the fuel lines.

No, he didn’t do anything besides test the starter. He said he’s not comfortable working further on it since he’s not an expert on it. I’m kind of done with the whole diesel thing and engine block heaters and death shudders so I’m not in the mood to deal with a whole new mechanic that I don’t know.

But the gas mileage is so good!

Haha. True. When I bought I had a 44mi one way commute though. Now it’s 3.

It may be too late if you are already at the point of just cashing out, but where are you located? I'm the traveling mechanic for these and can safely say that losing the turbo shouldn't have anything to do with a loss of compression. HOWEVER this is a question: How did the turbo fail, and how long did you let it continue running after / as it failed? Losing the oil is often a nasty side effect for a turbo failure if the shaft snaps.

Send me an email (button below) if you want to talk about having me work on your CRD - I can say with all honesty that I have worked on more of them than any other tech in the USA, and depending on what we discuss, you may not be as bad off as you think you are.

Where are you located? Maybe there is a lost member nearby that can take a look.

Did he replace the turbo and then do a compression test or did he do a compression test before replacing the turbo?

I’m in Colorado Springs. I think he just replaced the turbo.

Sam is the closest one to you - He is right in the same area, hopefully he can help.

Yep, there is a special Miller compression test adapter needed to do the compression test:
