Bloomberg News reports the U.S. Justice Department has offered to settle its emissions-cheating lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) if the automaker recalls 104,000 diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and Ram 1500 pickups from model years 2014-2016 and pays a substantial but unspecified civil penalty.

FCA was charged with using illegal software to pass laboratory emissions tests while permitting its diesel vehicles to exceed pollution standards on the road in a case filed last May by the EPA and California Air Resources Board, specifically on diesel powered 2014-'16 Ram 1500 pickups and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

Under the proposed settlement, the recall would require all of the affected Fiat Chrysler’s vehicles to be brought into full compliance with emissions standards but, unlike the VW settlement, FCA would not be required to buy back any vehicles

Which, basically, means that the US Justice dept doesn't have any solid proof whereby they can prove (FCA) cheated the system, but they have enough lawyer power to be a very expensive PITA for a long time.
So it's pay us now, or pay later defending yourselves for years.

Beside....there are no buybacks on MY 2013 and up Volkswagen 3.0L engines either, only a fix and sorry money. Buyback is only for 2009-2012 currently.

Reacquired Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars sit in a desert graveyard near Victorville, Calif., on Wednesday. Volkswagen AG has paid more than $7.4 billion to buy back about 350,000 vehicles, the automaker said in a recent court filing.

Thousands of Volkswagen cars await their fate in a California desert facility already well-known for storing old airplanes.

VERY SAD... while VW did indeed cheat, the general public is not getting the full story here. The EPA and environmental groups, along with a gullible media, are totally controlling the narrative on this subject.

Which is exactly what they want. The Environmental Protection Agency gets to play superhero; brag to the world that they have the world's toughest pollution control standards AND slap down manufacturers when they try to do something to make their diesel vehicles more reliable and fuel efficient in the reality of these ridiculous standards. The environmental groups get to be cheerleaders and dupe the general public in to new and unproven forms of transportation. Manufacturers who don't care about their customers get additional revenue from the massive repair bills brought on by poorly designed pollution control systems.

The consumer of these very expensive vehicles get none of what they were promised; unless they were smart enough to know at the time of purchase that they will have to upgrade the vehicle right from brand new to avoid the problems and recover lost fuel efficiency.

The pollution that was made to manufacture, crush and re-manufacture will be more than the little bit of fumes they would put out over the life of the car. Too bad that azz Obama was in power when the VW scandal broke.

It is just social justice, that is all it is.
