Post subject:  New battery options

Hey Guys....
I'm looking at needing a new battery as mine just tested as bad. I'm trying to not spend $300 if I can avoid it. Advance auto and autozone said they don't carry a battery for the CRD (which really surprises me). I looked at O'reilly's and they had 2 that would work. One was an 800cca battery for $141 and the other was a 775cca agm battery for $171. Of these 2....which do you think would work best....the slightly higher cca's or the agm battery with slightly lower cca's (or if y'all have another recommendation)?

Thanks!

Are you shopping for a group 34/78 battery for the original battery box, or a group 65 for the Sasquatch Parts upgrade box?

Check online for either. I think Amazon has an AC Delco group 34/78 Gold series for under $100.

Interstate has a high capacity Group 34 that is specified for the CRD. I have had very good luck with these in the Canadian climate. Have one in both of the CRDs. It wasn't that spendy either, approx. $140.

if you have a costco near you, the kirklands are actually interstates. $82 last I checked for our battery. Great warranty too.

Back in Nov ‘14 I got a Bosch group 34 from PepBoys.
Been performing great ever since.

Advance auto and Autozone just like all too many places simply look at their "book" and say 1) nope no CRD listed so no battery or 2) book says only a DCJ OEM battery works so go to dealer. Both answers are total BS at best. OEM battery was an AGM group 34R (+ and - terminals switched L><R) 750CCA IIRC. A perfectly acceptable replacement that will fit the tray is any group 34, preferably AGM, ideally 800+CCA battery - just drop in it with the terminals facing the same way as the OEM battery. You might have to a) slightly bend the end of the - cable to fit but it will fit fine and b) get a new insulated battery wrap if you want to keep one on the replacement battery. Cost ca. $150 for a brand name quality battery. A good example that I know for a fact works fine is the Interstate MTP-34.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for a group size 34 or 34r. I'll have to check some more. I looked at interstate's website and didn't see one listed for the CRD. We do have a Costco not too far from here but I'm not a member. At that price...it may pay to get a membership lol.

COSTCO
Business membership used to cost 100/year. Membership card was an American Express card. Got the best discounts with this membership, paid as refund at years end. Enough purchases easily covered the cost of membership for me at the time.

Normal membership was just a swipeable membership card. Didn't have end of year discount refund check, but cost was only $50/year.

These numbers are from 6-10 years ago. I don't imagine they have changed much, other than they broke ties with AMEX.

Interstate MTP-34 is the correct battery for the CRD. I have been using them for quite awhile. You are correct though if you search by application it will not come up. Search by battery type and you will find it.

Searching by application is often a total waste of time especially if you have the PN and are looking for a none standard part like oversize oil filter, heavy duty resistor for inside HVAC fan, battery, etc.

Costco had the best price and the best warranty for batteries.

Ok....this is where i'm at after checking some options and prices:
O'Reilly's brand Super Start 800CCA $108
O'Reilly's brand Super Start Platinum AGM 775CCA $153
Sams' Club Duracell 850CCA (sign said 850 website said 800) $100.84 (Reviews were pretty sketchy though at 5 5 star and 6 1 star reviews)
Sam's Club Duracell Platinum AGM 775CCA $147
Advance Auto AutoCraft Gold 800CCA $117 after online discout
PepBoys Bosch Premium 770CCA $106
PepBoys BoschPlatinum AGM 770CCA $143
Interstate MTP-34 800CCA $163

The Interstate battery may be a bit cheaper as where my wife works gets a discount on Interstate batteries and I can't call them until tomorrow morning to see their price on it. So....basically....I'm looking at a 800CCA battery for the the Low $100 range or a 775CCA AGM battery for the $140 range. Which would be the better route to go.....a regular battery or an AGM battery with 25 less CCA's? Thanks again for the input.

Get the regular. AGM should hold up better in colder temps, which you don't get.

AGM is also more susceptible to failure from being discharged deeply, traditional lead acid are better at taking being killed.

If you don't mind modifying your battery box a little you can fit the group 65 batteries, even more CCA and options.

As long as you don't use Optima's AGM's other AGM batteries are in every way better for high amp loads and deep discharges then wet cell batteries.

Spiral cell AGM's are like LiPo batteries, they can't take being discharged below a certian voltage,Flat plate AGM's don't suffer from those issues.

Ok....so after calling the local Interstate distributor I went with the Interstate MTP-34. With her discount we are getting it for $97.98. Hard to pass up that price. The only caveat is that we have to wait for them to deliver it to her workplace which will be between now and Monday.

I don't think you will regret the MTP-34 choice. I have two CRD's using them in winter climate with no issues.

I'm not sure I would trust the lead acid battery from advanced Auto parts. I know they have changed the product line several times. Here is my take on them. I got one in my CRD an 800cca auto craft gold in Nov. 2009. I was replaced in warranty in April 2012, then in winter of 2013 it was replaced 3 times under warranty. The battery could not put out enough power at 10-15F to start the Jeep. in that time the replacements they gave were from a different supplier and only rated at 750CCA. they did stand behind the warranty and finally did give me a full refund. I then got a Sears Diehard Platinum P1, which sears unfortunately no longer sells but has been trouble free since.

I would get the best flat cell AGM battery you can afford

I also went with the Interstate/Costco Battery - if that is an option at all for you.

Here is my prior post about how to make it work:

Replaced the Battery, and it works just fine now.

Hopefully I don't have some slow short / draw somewhere that caused the other battery to die, so I'll keep an eye on it.

On the plus side, I figured out that we can use the larger Interstate Battery from Costco ($89.95 + $15.00 core = $104.95 with 42 Month full replacement) and make it fit in the tray by simply trimming engine-side tray edge & the headlight-side clip edge, to make a snug fit while still using the bolt-down wedge.

Here are the details of the Battery (BCI Group Size: 65, Fitment Code: 4, Costco Item#: 850259, CCA: 850, CA: 1000, Reserve Capacity: 150 Size: 12"L x 7-7/16"W x 7-5/8"H)

Great alternative, for a great price.

Let me know if you need any more information.
