by Francesca Landini Automotive News Europe | February 26, 2018 09:13 MILAN -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to eliminate diesel engines from all its passenger vehicles by 2022, amid a collapse in demand and spiraling costs for the powertrain, the Financial Times reported. Under a four-year plan to be unveiled on June 1, the automaker will announce it intends to phase out the fuel type from the cars across its brands, the FT said, citing people familiar with the company strategy. Fiat Chrysler declined to comment on the report. FCA becomes the latest automaker to opt out of diesel after Toyota said it would likely not unveil another model with a diesel engine. Diesel's dominance in Europe has fallen since Volkswagen Group's emissions scandal, which led to rising political opposition to the fuel and plans by several European cities to ban some diesel models from its streets. European diesel registrations fell 7.9 percent in 2017, giving the fuel a 43.7 percent market share, down from 48 percent in 2016, according to data from JATO Dynamics. |

I guess the "glass half full" side would be falling price of diesel due to less demand. Possibly LPG and hydrogen as well. |

Looks like this may be the next engine design put in use on the horizon? The Achates opposed-piston engine The design, based on the Atkinson-cycle engine developed in 1882, eliminates cylinder heads and valve trains, reducing engine complexity and costs while improving efficiency. It can be configured to run on a number of fuels, including gasoline, diesel, natural gas and various biofuels, http://achatespower.com/

They put one in an F150 test platform. Its funded by Saudi Aramco if that tells you anything. I think its a last ditch effort to keep ICE relevant since all the auto MFG's are investing heavily in electric, but its been around a LONG time and clearly has not been adopted by the MFG's for some reason. I think there was even German bomber in WWII that used this type of engine, so its not like the technology wasnt there. This is where it is heading though. The diesels have become too complex with the emissions equipment, and dont offer enough efficiency benefits over GTDI's to make it a worthwhile investment for your average consumer. This doesnt apply to the guy who's gunna do a full delete and tune and take the risk of being fined $10000. But thats a small percentage of the consumer base and the MFG's dont care about those people. Look at the new L5P duramax. Word is they may not be able to crack the encryption on the ECU. GM doesnt want people deleting/tuning their trucks. |

Give about 10 years and if they get off there butts but combining Koenigsegg's "cam-less" design with Mazda's Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition can make a very reliable engine gas engine that will make power and reduce emissions. Then add in what Lamborghini is creating with Boeing,granting the cost of carbon fiber comes way down(labor to make has dropped 90% due to Lamborghini),and you could see some very powerful and efficient engines in the near future. |

All interesting concepts; it will be very interesting to see what shakes out in the future...
