Sad day in Gotham....

After uninstalling and reinstalling the MPPS software from totaldiagnostics.com site it appeared to run properly. It identified the ecu and read the existing stock tune, which I saved in multiple places.

Then I restarted the software, per Gordnado's suggestion in another post, and attempted to write Nick's 808 egr/fcv delete tune to the ecu.

After about 10 seconds the bar at the bottom lit up red and said "No reply from Ecu" at which point the ecu data pane in the upper right blanked and came back without a VIN number, etc.

I then attempted several times to id the ecu and read, but nothing works. I get an error window that pops up saying that I should send my logs to amtcartech, which will do nothing since this is a clone mpps cable, and the red progress bar reads "Sub function not supported or invalid format" when I attempt to read.

Looks pretty wiped. Am I screwed or is there a way out of this mess? With no VIN I don't think the mpps software can recognize the ecu, but I am unable to write in the VIN into the field. Is there a way to do this?

It sounds like a bad connection at the OBD2 connector. Are any of the pins bent or retracted?

Does the rig start?

Try re-writing the original tune?

Rig does not start. DOA.

It will not read, id, or write. Error message every time. Cable unplugged and plugged back in, no joy.

I'm thinking possibly corrupted software, but that's irrelevant as long as the ecu is wiped. I need to be able to write something in.

I read Eskymos posts in the DIY ECU Flash thread and he ended up having to buy a new ECU, but that was a while back, so I'm hoping someone has come up with a fix....

My next step would be to Contact GDE.
Don't know if they can help but it's worth a shot.
Plus, they are relatively close to you?

What’s your battery voltage like?

I came across this on the ECU Programmer Tech Support Blog:

http://www.ecu-programmer.com/how-to-recovery-edc15-with-mpps-in-bootmode/

Does anyone who knows more about this than me think this might work? I know it says EDC 15 and ours are EDC 16.

Keith at GDE told me they would have to take off the back cover of the ECU and redo the boot block. Is this the procedure he was describing? Has anyone done this?

At this point I don't think I have much to lose.

You may have a bad mpps cable. Mine failed at one point and was able to use the mpps cable to boot into recovery mode and rewrote the tune. I can email you the software that came with my cable? Or maybe you could borrow my mpps cable?

Post subject:  Re: ECU Wiped?

Thanks for the offer, Dez, but I think in the interest of time I'm going to go ahead and buy a replacement ecu. The problem is that it will still have a stock tune on it and need to be tweaked to remove egr/fcv errors. I don't think I'm going to do this myself and fry another ecu.

I will take a look at the software, however, because I think that may have been my problem to begin with. I'm going to keep trying to crack this ecu and get the ecu data (VIN, etc.) loaded back in if I can. How did you go about getting MPPS into boot mode?

You can email the file to: five7driver@aol.com

Thanks.

When I hit write, it said something about failing write and asked if I wanted to try to recover. I can't remember exactly the chain of events but it worked.

It's ALIVE!! :frankie:

After numerous attempts with different OBD II devices and the MPPS cable I was finally able to load Nick's 808 egr/fcv delete tune and after a deep breath and big gulp I turned the key...and it started! :)

Appears to be running fine, but I will have to do a full highway road test tomorrow. What I am confused about are two things:
first, why has all of my ecu data information disappeared from the top right pane of the MPPS software screen? It shows only Bosch Software number, Chrysler ECU type, and Chrysler file no. , all other info, including VIN are absent. Is this normal for this tune? I didn't think it would work if the VIN were not present.

Second, I still have a P0403 DTC! I thought this tune would eliminate the egr code. Am I doing something wrong here?

And last, all of this took place after I had, of course, purchased a $700 replacement ecu after a multi-hour nationwide search. These things are really hard to come by and expensive if you can find one. Kudos to Adam at Module Experts for lending his expertise and cooperation on this (and not getting torqued when I called back to cancel!). I would send people to him if they need a replacement ecu.

Regarding the DTC, sorry, dumb question, but have you manually gone in and reset the DTC? This is likely one of the codes that won't automatically reset.

Look at the top of page 70 of the DIY ECU thread for 808 tune files with egr code deleted.

So glad you got it sorted out!
Many have reflashed these ECM's with no issues. Not sure what caused your problems.
I have reflashed my own ECM at least a dozen times without so much as a hiccup.
But I do use an old XP laptop and not sure if that makes any difference.

FYI for anyone else needing the ECU reprogrammed to your vehicle I am willing to help for a small fee to cover my time if you are local, or if you are willing to ship a replacement ECU and your SKIM module to me I can reprogram the ECU to match your SKIM.

As far as 0403 goes, you need to download the dtc delete tune which I have done here.

For those of you, that want the Mild 808 Yeti Tune, Mild Nicks 808 Tune or Stock 808 Tune with P0403,P1140 Deleted, Follow the link here.

If you decide to download Yetis or Nicks tune, Please send them a PM Thanking them for their work. Ive only went through and removed DTC's based off the How-To written on the forum, using the public tunes already posted :)

I've attempted to erase the 0403 code several times but it keeps coming back. I'll follow the link to try to get the code programmed out (thanks, Dez), however I must admit I'm a little gunshy about trying to reprogram the ecu at this point..

Is it still setting the CEL on the dash? Because there are several codes that will still come up on your code reader, but they won't necessarily trip the CEL. I have codes for AC, VH, and I think the egr, but no CEL if you know what I'm saying?

Author:  five7driver [ Fri Mar 09, 2018 12:58 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: ECU Wiped?

Yes, the CEL is on, and the only code set is P0403 (active, not stored).

I think I'm going to do Gordnado's trick and hook up the egr solenoid and just tuck it away somewhere. I need to get this car back into service and I can't risk another bricking that may be unrecoverable this time. I'm pretty sure it's bad software or a bad cable that was my problem the first time, so until that gets resolved the result may very well be the same.

One unanswered question: To anyone that has Nick's 808 egr/fcv delete + mild tune installed, does it clear out the ecu data block in MPPS software? I thought it needed the VIN to program, but mine is blank and it still programmed.

After i plugged the solenoid back in, I still had to manually cancel the code. It didn't go by it's self.
