My first thought when the issue happened was a blown turbo... 1 min after start up the oil pressure light came on. I heard a minor noise coming from under the hood. I pulled over and checked the oil. It was barley registering on the dip stick. I had some oil and topped it off. I started and again and it runs great at idle but then when you start driving it acted like it didn’t have power...(very similar to when I blew an intercooler hose). I pulled over again the light was still on and was pour black smoke out of the exhaust and noise coming from the turbo. I had it towed home and haven’t messed with it since. |

Sure seems like a blown turbo. Remove the turbo inlet hose, stick your fingers in there, and try to wiggle the shaft. |

Also look and make sure the wheel is sitting dead center in the intake, and spins freely. Weird, I know, but there is a failure that sounds like this example, where the compressor wheel will be not wiggling, but off-center, and resists spinning. |

Took the intake off and have a decent amount of play in the shaft. It wasn’t as much play as I would of thought given the suddenness of the failure. Would this also cost that much lost of oil?? How hard of a job in the turbo replacement? |

Go to http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/ and download my tech tips PDF, scroll down to the blown turbo removal and GDE turbo install bookmarks. Removal is obvious but for install just ignore the GDE specific items like welding in the new down pipe. Comments: 1. be sure to soak these turbo to manifold nuts for like 24hrs in a good penetrating lube to prevent breaking the studs. 2. you will need from say idParts a) turbo to manifold gasket; b) oil feed line crush washers; c) oil drain line gasket and line to block grommet. |

I had the same happen on my KK. Got a remanufactured one, from a company in Surrey (Im in the UK) Cost me £300. Replaced the hoses whilst I was there. Has run like a dream for the last 12 months. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Two Tips, the bolts can be a real pain in the booty on the turbo, to the extent that you'll nearly snap them off trying to remove them. Tip #1: Soak the bolts in Penetrating solvent overnight, and again before you try it. Tip #2: Plug in the block heater to get the block up to temperature a bit more prior to trying to remove them. Please do both. |

I installed the new turbo... easier than I expected, however; my oil pressure light is still on. I let it idle for about 7-10 mins. I then attempted to take it for a test drive around the block. I never exceeded 15mph. Within about a min the engine died. I started in and moved about 50ft and it died again. I towed it back home and attempted To start again where is idled for about 30 seconds before it died again. I then disconnected the battery and then atttepted to start it. It started and ran for about five minutes...the oil pressure light was still on (oil level is perfect). I attempted another test drive and it died again. I towed it back and now it sits..... Is this due to the oil pressure light!?!? |

don't go on the road test any more this engine will seize up on you, ! so remove oil pressure sending unit and install mechanical pressure gauge there and start it up and run it only 1 min and see if the gauge is registering any oil pressure ? |

Got an oil pressure gauge put on a it read at 20psi in about 45 seconds I was scared to run it anymore than that... |

yes you can replace sending unit as suggested , but you need to give us more details ,, oil pressure that you read on mechanical gauge 20 psi is it idle or high idle pressure ? |

Yea cuz 20psi cold is not enough. Could be the reason why the turbo went out in the first place, crank and rod bearings would be the next to go on the list. |

Ok... the Jeep has sat for a few days. On a cold engine the oil pressure is at 60psi at idle for 45. |

Mine has 149K on the short block With Mobile 1 TDT Started cold at idle is 100psi As it warms it drops to 50psi at idle. There are many things that could cause low pressure, but all of them I can think of are, unfortunately, bad news. |
