Need a little help. I have a 2005 liberty CRD. I noticed today that a noise happens when the key is turned off. The engine does not have to have been running. Just turn key on and off.
The noise is coming from something on the drivers side of the engine. It sounds a lot like a buzzer and it will repeat it for 5-6 times before stopping. What is this and how do I fix it?

Thanks Terry

Previous owner might have added an inline electric fuel pump and wired it funny.

My 2002 Export CRD has always done this....traced it to the vacuum solenoid that activates the EGR letting off stored vacuum after shutdown.

The early Export CRDs have slightly different EGR system to the USA models I think but the your noise is probably vacuum related also....maybe from the vacuum pump which activates the brake booster and the HVAC interior air flow system?

Thanks for the info. I can tell it comes from a part on the drivers side of the engine. It has an electrical connector on it and is about 3” x 3”. I’ll try to figure out how to post a picture our maybe a video to show it

IIRC the flow control valve motor can make some noise at shutdown. FCV is on driver's side (left hand drive) and is what the hose from the intercooler connects too somewhat below the alternator.

Thanks guys for the comment about the FCV. That is possible. It does have a flex hose that goes to it, this hose could come from the intercooler. I’ll look further.

Done more research. It is the FCV. I have pulled the hose and the valve is open. When it starts making the noise the flapper starts bouncing. I unplugged the FCV and no more noise. Done a lot off looking on this site and others and lot of comments say unplug and forget. After I unplugged I see no change in the way the Jeep runs. I have found a couple of places I can get a replacement but not sure I need to. Thoughts?
Thanks

It has plastic gears inside that it uses to move the butterfly valve. Mine made no noise when I bought it, but when I pulled it out it had a couple of broken teeth. If there is some reason that you MUST have it in place, at least pull the round butterfly valve out of the rotating shaft, and make a blockoff plate for the exhaust crossover. If not, then pull it and put in a weeks elbow or full 1&2 egr delete kit. Follow with a tune that eliminates the DTC codes from having the EGR and FCV unplugged.

EDIT: For full transparency's sake, when I bought it it would start and idle but wasn't driveable, so I wouldn't hear that noice anyway, but the gears were broken/stripped at any rate. That's what I suspect is making that buzzing noise in yours.

As Gordon suggested, absolute best bet is to totally remove the entire EGR system and eliminate the the whole mess by adding a Weeks Elbow Kit from Sasquatch Parts.

If that is not an option, at least add a block off plate in the EGR exhaust feed tube to the EGR valve and remove the butterfly flapper in the FCV.
There are only two small torx screws holding the butterfly plate in the shaft of the FCV.
