I’m a pretty mechanically minded guy but I’m over my head here. I bought a 2005 Liberty CRD last week and have driven it about 250 miles while I read up on the “personality traits” of these vehicles. Well two days ago it lost power momentarily while driving, but it came right back again so I was thinking perhaps water in the fuel. The next day it lost power and although it runs smooth it smokes and is seriously underpowered. I had been messing underneath with a small exhaust leak where the egr tube attaches to the egr the day before, but I can’t see anything that I might have inadvertently disturbed, so I think it’s coincidence. The leak is pretty small. Okay so I’m getting a p0299 low boost code. I’ve removed and inspected the hoses, cleaned the map/boost sensor, and nothing happened. I took a vacuum line off the solenoid to the turbo and it helped some but still smokes bad and doesn’t have as much power as before. There’s a tiny bit of play in the turbo but it spins freely and makes no noises. I’m at a loss? |

Well, I figured that I’ve already cleaned everything else, I might as well clean the MAF sensor even though it didn’t look bad. And that was the culprit apparently. It blew out a big cloud of smoke under full throttle then cleared iut and has full power again. I’m guessing there was just enough dirt in it for the ecm to think there was not enough airflow for the turbo. |

Thought I'd chime in on my recent P0299 low boost saga: 1. Hoses/intercooler/vacuum lines checked, and no leaks found 2. MAP sensor cleaned, with no change in code 3. Turbo vanes actuator control rod movement checked, and was found to move minimally. Twice tried the "internal turbo cleaning while installed" procedure with no improvement 4. Turbo removed and disassembled, and all vanes and unison ring found practically locked in place by carbon build-up. Manually cleaned all, reinstalled turbo, and it runs great now! The vehicle has 185,000 miles on it, and while the crankcase vent hose has been re-routed/disconnected for years, the Weeks EGR delete/Green Diesel eco tune weren't installed until it was at 110,000 miles. That, I'm sure, contributed to the turbo carbon build-up. I'd say anybody reasonably mechanically inclined can do the same repair work I did, so don't be afraid to jump into it. Steve |

OBTW: Keith at Green Diesel Engineering provided great advice on the matter, and steered me toward checking the turbo out. I highly recommend him for great customer service and for his products/services too. Steve |
