Not sure now. Called the place that installed it and they said it was OE, mechanic here said it was a Garrett. I ordered a Garrett and got it in a couple of days. Rebuilt options (more money, longer warranty) from NAPA said it could take as long as 15 days to get it. Anyway it appears the shaft was wiggling side to side quite a bit.

Picked it up, running pretty good until going up grade just before my driveway. Lost power, got some pretty good knocking, then it cleared up. Took it out again, on the way home going up a substantial uphill grade, seemed to start missing, then got some knocking between 1300-2000 rpm. No codes. Then I pulled it out of the garage to get to some stuff and the CEL came on throwing a P0303 code. My luck the mechanic closed shop to go on vacation.

if your engine makes a intermittent rattling sound, and also, if it smokes excessively at the tail pipe and smells like raw fuel , you must check injectors , one of them may be sticking

Well it died, not before throwing the fuel injector code, low turbo boost and o/d codes. Won't start. Cranks and does a little " brrrruuumm" before it dies again. This sucks. Worried that I'll have something really major broken after I've dropped new tires, brakes, front drive shaft , turbo, hoses, etc., etc., into it. Worst case, what's a replacement engine go for?

whole used engine varies but probably 2400 to 3500 depending on mileage most over 100K miles. I believe a long block is about $7000 brand new . Whole new engine not sure. New head about $1800 from US. Depending on where you are etc probably better to try to get someone to fix yours correctly with other upgrades at the same time and then you know what you have.

You definitely need a person familiar with these CRD s . You might contact Geordi for advice or some of the members may know a mechanic experienced with these jeeps near you.
The one thing I would not do is take it to a dealer or just any diesel mechanic. They need to have experience with this particular engine.

Thanks for the reply. It's like I live on the other side of the moon. Got two dealers, one going east, one going west each 45 minutes away. Closest mechanic was the one who just wanted to start throwing parts at it. Where it's at now is someone that I was referred to. He's not sure yet but afraid I may have sucked a valve. Rockers were replaced about 18 mos/ 40,000 miles ago as well. Recently spotted one that looks identical to mine at an auto auction place. 235k on the odometer, Ithink it was $3200.00.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in south central Colorado. Mechanic hasn't gotten around to looking at it yet. Still don't know for sure what's wrong. I'll figure out the PM thing. Thanks.

Mechanic said #3 injector shot. How long do injectors last? That's the one throwing the code. No other injector codes.

Injectors can last a really long time provided that bad/dirty fuel doesn’t muck them up.
I recommend removing all 4 and sending them to a diesel injection shop for testing.
Or search eBay for a good used injector.

But seriously, I would have them all tested before deciding on a replacement.
And mark all the injectors when you pull them so they can go back in the holes they came out of.

It’s also possible that a loose connector is the problem.

With all the unpaved roads around here, my Jeep is pretty much the daily driver (and the only one that can tow my camper) until I can get a second suitable vehicle. I dug deep and bought four new ones. Hoping that will solve my problems for awhile.

Protecting expensive injectors and the CP3 injection pump is why some of us install a secondary 2 micron fuel filter to protect these items.
The stock filter is about 10 microns new and quickly degrades from there.
If you install a secondary 2 micron fuel filter, you should have an intank fuel pump installed.

Well the new injectors are in, it starts but misfires and coughs exhaust back through the intake. The mechanic is throwing his hands up. Thinks it's a rocker. Those were replaced 40,000 miles ago. Mechanic thinks it should go to someone who knows more about them. Anybody in Colorado know this stuff? Thanks.

Might it be your ECU giving up the ghost? Everything else seems to be checked.

Smoke out the intake is bad.
Could be a bad rocker.
But I suspect a camshaft timing problem.

Thanks for the replies. This just sucks. The Jeep has been laid up most of the summer.

He COULD be right, but I'd check the EGR first.
You said you "replaced" the EGR. This leads me to believe there is still one installed. If it sticks open, as they are sometimes prone to do, it will behave precisely as you describe.

Thanks for the replies. I think this mechanic is just done with it. Heck, even the dealership is saying " Umm, I'll ask my mechanics if they've ever worked on one." Looks like I'll have it towed the 35 miles home and start Googling unless I can find a shop to work on it. Is there any good threads about checking a stuck EGR?
