Stock 2005 Sport CRD with 130K. I've got a whistle? whine? noise coming on at around 1700 rpm with black smoke. Had new turbo, EGR, timing belt, etc. done at 100K. Seems to run fine at highway speeds, smokes at 1700-2000 while accelerating or going up hills. Don't see any cracked hoses. Had the wife rev it up while in park and the hood up and saw black smoke coming from somewhere. Couldn't tell from where, the fan was blowing everything around. Anyone have ideas? Thanks for the help.

Pull intake from turbo and verify turbo is still good, Have you done/had the timing belt replaced? Exhaust in hood may be a EGR Issue.

Pop the serpentine belt off to disable the fan for the next 'test'. You might be able to pinpoint where the smoke is originating from.

Found it! Cracked connector hose from the air box. Now to order one. With luck it'll be here in five days. Thanks for your replies.

Well, got the new hose and replaced that. One of the intercooler hoses (the one that was replaced 18 months ago) had cracks and replaced that. I cleaned the MAP sensor. And, I'm still blowing black smoke. Mechanic threw the scanner on it and said the turbo isn't putting out the boost it should. He's stumped and I'm pining for my jeep. Turbo and EGR are about 15 months old. Not sure which way to look. I still get the whistling and if I hold the pedal at 2,000 rpm going up a hill the sound changes. To me it sounds like air sucking or blowing through something. Seems to be coming from the driver's side. Anybody have any clues? Thanks for the help.

Hmm, make sure the vanes on the turbo aren't stuck. Pull the vacuum line off the actuator and watch the connecting rod. It should drop about 1/2" and rise again when you plug the vacuum line back in.

you said 'did the egr'. Does this mean you removed it? If so, maybe your 'plug' on the back of the manifold is leaking; Low boost, smoke under the hood, and whistling.

January '17 the turbo and egr was replaced along with the timing belt and a Hayden fan. That was about 40,000 miles ago.

check exhaust manifold gasket and turbo mounting gasket ,and bolts. we did this step first on big trucks engine and we did have pressure tested intake system CAC , with shop pressure tester , so you my need to fabricate something to pressurize it .

Spray some liquid leak detector on the Intercooler. (90% water, 10% dawn concentrated dish soap).

The intercooler is known to crack on the passenger and driver's sides where the plastic meets the metal.

Finally got back to the Jeep problem. For the heck of it I replaced the sensor with a new one. Ran around a bit. Seemed better until I went up a long grade. No oomph there! Hung in at 45 mph. laying a trail of smoke and then the CEL came on. Threw a P0299. This is the first time it threw a code. I did go and spray around looking for leaks and didn't seem to find any yet.

P0299 is a Boost Pressure Sensor Deviation error.
Download the relevant year KJ Service Manual here to look up this error and follow the actions with what to do.

You sure you put in a good sensor?

P0299-BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR POSITIVE DEVIATION
((This code needs to be cancelled by a scanner.))
For a complete wiring diagram Refer to Section 8W
² When Monitored:
With the engine running.
² Set Condition:
The Boost Pressure Sensor indicates actual turbocharger boost is greater than the ECM setpoint.

Possible Causes
AIR FILTER
AIR RESTRICTION
CHECKING FOR AIR LEAKS
CHECKING THE BOOST CONTROL VACUUM SUPPLY
BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR
TURBOCHARGER

Diagnostic Test
1. CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTC
NOTE: If the ECM detects and stores a DTC, the ECM also stores the engine/vehicle operating conditions under which the DTC was set. Some of these conditions are displayed on the scan tool at the same time the DTC is displayed.

NOTE: Before erasing stored DTCs, record these conditions. Attempting to duplicate these conditions may assist when checking for an active DTC.

NOTE: Ensure all turbocharger inlet and outlet tubes are connected properly, without damage and restriction before continuing with this test.

NOTE: If DTC P0401 or P0402 is present with this DTC, diagnose P0401 or P0402 before diagnosing this DTC.

Turn the ignition on.
With the scan tool, erase ECM DTCs.
Test drive the vehicle.
Monitor the scan tool for ECM DTCs.
NOTE: A clogged Boost Pressure Solenoid Air Filter can cause this DTC to set. Inspect this filter and replace as necessary before continuing with this test.
Did this DTC set again?
Yes >> Go To 2
No >> Test Complete.

2. AIR FILTER
Turn the ignition off.
Remove and inspect the Air Filter for soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction.
Were any of these problems found?
Yes >> Replace the Air Filter element.
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
No >> Go To 3

3. AIR RESTRICTION
NOTE: Inspect all air intake and turbocharger related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause a this DTC to set.
Turn the ignition off.
Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related tubes and connections.
Were any problems found?
Yes >> Repair or replace as necessary.
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
No >> Go To 4

4. CHECKING THE BOOST CONTROL VACUUM SUPPLY
Turn the ignition off.
Refer to symptom Checking The Boost Control Vacuum Supply to check the turbocharger vacuum supply system.
Were any problems found?
Yes >> Repair as necessary
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
No >> Go To 5

5. CHECKING FOR AIR LEAKS
Turn the ignition off.
Remove the Inlet Pressure Sensor.
Connect smoke machine 84-04 to the Inlet Pressure Sensor port in the intake duct and begin injecting smoke into the intake system. Observe all intake system components for evidence of smoke leakage.
Is there evidence of smoke leakage?
Yes >> Repair or replace as necessary.
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
No >> Go To 6

6. BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR
Turn the ignition off.
Replace the Boost Pressure Actuator in accordance with the Service Information.
NOTE: Ensure the ECM and Boost Pressure Actuator harness connectors are connected.
Test drive the vehicle.
With the scan tool, check for this DTC to set again.
Did this DTC set again?
Yes >> Replace the Turbocharger assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
No >> Replace the Boost Pressure Actuator.
Perform the ECM Verification Test Ver. 1 (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Thanks BillyBob, GornadoCRD, and everyone else for the replies. Seems like there aren't many mechanics well versed in the CRD. Cancelled the code and I ordered a vacuum sensor and filter that should be here tomorrow.
I really haven't wrenched on anything since the 70's but that looks like it's starting to change. The shop owner where I had itaken it wanted to start right off throwing a turbo and injectors at it even though he wasn't sure what was wrong with it.
Gornado, could've swore I saw in another thread you were in Colorado? Do you or anybody know of any good CRD mechanics down toward banana belt way? Thanks again everyone.

You stated:
Quote:
the turbo and egr was replaced

If the EGR is still in service; it could be leaking by and and loosing boost backwards back into the exhaust manifold.
A simple EGR block off plate would eliminate any possibility of leakage and can be installed with simple hand tools in less than 30 minutes by most people.

I'm in Oregon, actually. Worked for several years in the San Diego area, and 3 in Tijuana, but other than that in Oregon.

Well it looks like my turbo is shot after 16 months and 40,000 miles of service. That just sucks.
