All the other diesels I Have owned had a dual battery set up. Does anyone run this. This was my first winter the the CRD and it seriously did not like the cold.

Get the Sasquatch group 65 battery tray, and a group 65 AGM battery. Pretty much the same thing and safer, with less rigamarole.

Use 5V steel glow plugs with original 7v factory programming.

no more winter starting problems.

I know next to nothing technical about Webasto heaters or their cost, but it sounds like a solution that works up there.

For the OP the group 65 can be installed in the OEM tray for free by trimming the edge of the battery box.

Even the 5v GP with 7v programming doesn't fire as nice as the ceramics did. I wouldn't say no more winter start problems, just fewer.

Perhaps, depending on various factors, but mine went from irritating, to 0 problems. Fires every time, within 5-6 revolutions.
Granted, last winter wasn't as cold as some, but this crd didn't even notice.
No more winter start problems with this crd. It's the only one I can answer for.

I’m also on dual batts. Both mounted in the trunk. I have the 7v glow plugs and Sasquatch grid heater and still doesn’t like anything below 10F. It starts every time, but it turns several times and then it throws out a big cloud of smoke. Clearly, in my case, the glow plugs don’t heat enough for the cold temps, leaving the grid heater on for 2+ minutes helps alleviate the smoke and starts a bit faster.

Grid heater = a coil like glow plug that’s mounted in the intake and heats up the intake air.

Version 2 will be out in time for winter 2018
60 seconds or less, will start with no smoke well below 0F.
Designed, tested and manufactured in Minnesota.

Replaces the adapter at the manifold intake?

Looks Sweet Seth!
Looks very similar in design to the OEM grid heater in my big Dodge Cummins. And it works like a champ, with no glow plugs!
Will it come with its own wiring, relay, and timer, or will it strictly be a manual operation with a switch? Sure people are curious....

Looking forward to it. Anything below 10F and it had trouble starting if it had not been plugged in. I took it to the mountains in October and had to get a jump every morning. The battery in it is only 2 years old.

Battery could be 2 years old and be low on cranking amps. I warranty replaced one this winter and the Jeep starts much better now.

I like this! Somehow I came across this thing ( https://www.glacierdieselpower.com/files/arctic-heat-installation.pdf ) a while back which reminds me of your intake elbows. Unfortunately that one's much bigger diameter than the CRD intake tubing. I'd hoped to find one that would conveniently fit the bolt pattern on the intake plenum, but basically all the ones I found seem to have a square bolt pattern rather than rectangular. I'm looking forward to yours being released!

If you do a dual battery setup I highly recommend this from Blue Sea Systems

https://www.bluesea.com/products/7622/M ... 2V_DC_500A

500 Amp magnetic latching (bi-stable) relay automatically combines batteries during charging and isolates batteries when discharging and when starting engine

• Manual control switch provides an added level of safety allowing control with or without power, and offering LOCK OFF capability for servicing
• Includes ML-Series Remote Control Contura Switch PN 2146
• Automatically manages the charging of two large battery banks
• Allows paralleling of battery banks for emergency starting
• 500 Ampere continuous rating to support high-output alternators
• Magnetic Latch (ML)—ACR draws very low current (<40mA to monitor terminal voltage) in the "ON" or "OFF" states, and draws moderate current for very short time when changing state
• Dual sensing—senses charge on both battery banks
• Start Isolation (SI)—can be configured for temporary isolation of House loads from Engine circuit during engine cranking to protect sensitive electronics
• Engine Isolation (EI)—can be configured for isolation of two engines while both are running to protect engine electronics and maximize alternator output
• Senses charging on two battery banks
• LED output to remotely indicate when batteries are combined, isolated, in voltage lockout, or in Start or Engine isolation

FYI: it looks like the Yanmar intake heater I can get from work. Standard on many Thermo King semi-trailer reefers.

And it will match intake bolt pattern and replace FCV valve in my mock ups I did.

The heater mounts between the adapter and the manifold:

The Yanmar bolt pattern is not a match for the intake manifold which is where ours is mounted, as close to the manifold as possible for the best performance. Our housing is a custom made CNC part specifically for this application.

It doesnt reduce to much the air flow?
Otherwise it seems really good

I have also installed the grid heater from a LLY Duramax. I installed this after learning to weld aluminum about a week ago so I have not tested it in winter yet.

Well that is definitely ambitious!

Side benefit if you ever have to pass visual inspection: They will never see your Weeks EGR fixes or LLY heater!

How much PDC re-wiring did you have to do for the loom that goes under the headlights and radiator? You've moved it forward about 18" I would guess.

How many Amp-hours does that give you?
