I feel like I'm going mad. I read the noob guide and watched a few videos on timing belt changes along with reading the guides here. None of them actually say the loosen direction. Many cars I've worked on have an indication on the fan shroud as to the direction to loosen the fan but the CRDs have no such mark. Which way do I pull my big booty crescent wrench to loosen up the fan? Can someone make it very clear to me please.

It can be on there really tight. Removal methods include: use a Lisle fan clutch tool on the nut just behind the fan viscous coupling with an air hammer. Alternatively a very large crescent wrench can work if hit with a small sledgehammer or palm nailer. Whatever method is used insert a 3/8" allen wrench thru a small hole in the pulley mount base against the "hidden" nut at ca. 4 o'clock or a long socket attached to a ratchet thru a larger hole in the pulley mount base on the same nut to keep the pulley from spinning. Place towel under where the fan runs and tucked up under the TB cover to catch the small bolts that are likely to get dropped before they vanish onto the skid plate.

Be very careful removing the fan shroud - use a towel in front of the fan to avoid puncturing the radiator; keep careful track of the 2 fan shroud bolts (their length is critical) and "capture" the nuts for those bolts in their recess with zip ties; and consider cutting the bottom half of the shroud off below those bolts to make future removal easier.
