How many do a quick test run after installing timing belt but before putting everything back together? I've hand cranked several cycles and the marks all line up and the tensioner stays set.

I can see it would be fairly simple if one left the intercooler, radiator etc on.

But do folks do it ok with everything apart? I'm worried about sucking debris into turbo inlet. What about all the loose wires/sensors? I guess any codes set could be erased. I know it doesn't need coolant for the few second run.

I've thought about disabling the fuel and just spinning it over good with the starter.

Would like the benefit of a quick run just to make sure tensioner stays correct. I've read in some places of a "1mm pointer overlap" but not sure what that is for?

When I do TB jobs, I always start the engine while the TB cover is off to observe proper TB belt and pulleys operation.
All the sensors need to be connected so it will in fact start and run.
If no coolant in system, only run for ten or fifteen seconds max!
After run, recheck timing and TB tensioner position, readjust if necessary....

Just make sure Fluffy the cat isn't sucked up...

You'll be fine for short run.. just make sure nothing is close enough to get inhaled, or jiggle down and lost. I have a bad habit of leaving bolts, tools on the cowling, fender wells, any flat place! Check and double check.. Otherwise you'll be taking the skid plate off to retrieve fallen items. Don't rev it up and have the fan kick up a bunch of dirt..

I think that 'pointer overlap' is for going just beyond the marks, so it's a tad tighter at first.. but as any new belt needs a short 'run in' to fully seat, going a tad more right off the bat generally settles down to 'right on' soon after.

I used to be in the habit of stuffing shop rags or paper towels into openings to prevent wayward nuts, bolts, etc from falling inside and causing damage.

After getting Extremely lucky when I forgot to pull one out before turning over one time, I quit that practice.

Rather, in the case of hose or bib portion, I place the rag flat over the opening, and use a good strong rubber band or an actual hose clamp to hold the rag in place so it won't get sucked in.

If you watch my timing belt videos you will see I test start and run the engine for a short time to verify the timing belt fitment, I've caught some issues before by doing this and then checking tension after.

I once had a paper towel sitting in the turbo outlet and inlet to keep debris out.

I pulled the one out of the outlet and forget the inlet, sucked the papertowel through and made confetti. Another time I sucked a leave into the turbo and made leave confetti.

As long as it doesn't get into the intercooler its fine.

Also if you start it with the header panel wiring disconnected the outside air temp sensor will cause a CEL.

Same for viscous heater and some others, be prepared to clear the CELs after starting it.

Well I was successful in the startup. I made sure to pull the rags out of the inlets, rewired the alternator and secured it and then crossed my fingers. Started right up! Reset the tensioner and started it again.

But my glee was short lived. Next order of business was to replace glow plus. I promptly broke the first one off with only about 2 threads remaining despite several weeks of penetrating liquid. Ugg.

Yea. :grim:

Hoping to get an extraction kit like you and some others have recommended. All I ended up with was the ceramic part and a copper tip.

In hindsite I should have just put enough back together to run it a bit and get the block warmed up but I was wanting to keep it easier to access the plugs, elbow, etc.

Got a kit. But came with no intructions and only a half@$$ list of components.

Anybody have a link to a good video of how to use one of these extraction kits?

Thanks

YouTube has some videos on how to. Although not VM 2.8 specific, process is similar on most diesel heads.

That was most helpful, turned out to be the exact same kit I bought too!

Well I’ve gotten “lucky” so far. The other 3 plugs camme out fine. This #1 is the easiest to get to and I’m hoping that an easy out can coax it out after heating, otherwise I’ll use the puller.

Soak with plenty of penetrating oil like Kroil or PB Blaster. Plug in block heater to help heat things up.
