First post here... Hello everyone . We have a 2005 Liberty 2.8 CRD no start , will crank forever , hits off immediately with 3 cc's of gas injected into intake tube @ air cleaner . Idles smooth @ 750 rpm , no smoke , good power range . Engine at operating temp. Turn off , will not start again unless it gets it's gas spritz . ?? There is no voltage to injectors during cranking , voltage appears to injector and immediate start with the gas priming . I must say I like M B 240d's simplicity , but alas ; they have no 4WD . thank you , Fred

Try priming and bleeding the fuel filter unit.

I did bypass the filter housing for troubleshooting purposes , we have solid fuel from tank to high press pump , transparent filter also for your viewing pleasure . I thinks I need to see an engine management electrical schematic .

If you're pulling air past the pushlok fittings between the tank and the steel lines, bypassing the filter will just make things worse. (transfers vacuum from the filter housing to the entire fuel line between the fuel in the tank and the cp3.)

thanks Gordnado , I omitted that I have a 5 psi feed pump at tank so there is minimum vacuum at fuel feed . I dropped the tank to clean and ascertain a clean pick-up screen in tank .looking at elec. communication to injectors ?

I am slow with coming clean... any push-lock absurdities are lying out in the driveway someplace , new feed line with double clamps on barbed connectors ( like I do on Cummins marine fuel systems , in a tight canal with barge/tug traffic we have not the ability to simply 'coast' to the side of the road when in trouble ) fuel supply is vacuum leak free , we have solid fuel from tank to cp3 . thank you so much for access to pin-outs . My big query is this ; are these electronic managed diesel vehicles giving us substantially reduced emissions and 100 mpg's ?

no mpg in the 100s that I'm aware of.

Ok i'm satisfied about your air-in-fuel prevention, although very concerned about unfiltered fuel to cp3 and injectors. They are FAR less tolerant than your Mercedes.

Have you checked the injector fuse and relay in the PDC by the battery? Probably good, as you say it continues to run on diesel once it fires on gas.

Weird, that once it fires on gas fumes, it continues to run and drive fine. That being the case, means there is no problem with the injectors, electrical otherwise. This indicates they are being prevented from injecting while cranking due to lack of rail fuel pressure rather than electrical message.

I suggest replacing the CKP (Crankshaft position) sensor, and the CMP (Camshaft position sensor) either has the ability to cause weird starting and dying behaviour. They are really much easier and faster to replace than to try to troubleshoot, and aren't all that expensive. Besides, they are reaching the age where they seem to go bad anyways.

If that doesn't fix the problem, the next most likely would be a sticking Fuel Pressure (relief) Solenoid at the back of the rail, hope it gets fixed before you get to this, because that's a whole greater realm or 2 of PITA to change, and they are expensive. Unfortunately I presently, from your description, believe this will be your culprit, but hope that the less expensive sensors might fix it.

The electrically managed diesels can give multiple, very precise injection events within the same injection-combustion cycle. I think the biggest improvements are decreased emissions, and decreased noise levels. The mileage and power increases, IMO, are more due to improvements in Turbo control, although the ability to control injection pressure in the rail certainly helps.
