Hi everyone, I have a 05 liberty CRD that died and will not fire. Before all this started it was running poorly and leaking oil from the rear seal. I pulled the engine and replaced the rear seal and installed an egr delete. I cleaned the intake/valve cover, replaced both camshafts and followers, replaced the high pressure fuel pump and injectors with new bosch parts, replaced the fuel filter head and installed an in tank pump also a new cam sensor and intake psi sensor, also replaced timing belt ava tensioner. I bled the fuel system and got it running. It sounded good and idled great. It revved up good. Probably ran for 10 minutes or so. Shut it off and restarted several times ok. The next day I went to pull it out of the shop and it started fine and ran good then just died in the middle of backing out of shop. I have egr codes but no other codes. I have 16000psi fuel pressure cranking and have rebled the fuel system. The cam signal reads 0 but the crank reads 200 or so cranking. The sync signal reads no sync. I have checked wiring and a new sensor and it all checks ok. Please help

First, check all your fuses.

Second, crank sensor fails more frequently than cam sensor.

I have checked all fuses with test light and multi meter. I can read the crank sensor with scan tool and it reads 200 rpm or so cranking. And the tach comes up while cranking but I don't get cam/crank signal sync while cranking. Will a crank sensor fail but still read? I also switched the asd relay with fan relay and both work.

Most people here don’t have scan tools that can read the crank sensor.
And crank sensor faults typically don’t set a code.
Several crank-no-start problems have been fixed in the driveway or on the side of the road by replacing the crank sensor.
You’ve already replaced the cam sensor.
So...

Anything else you think you may have missed?

It's possible but not probable that your new cam sensor may be bad, or the connector/wiring also could be.

I'm using a snapon verdict scan tool and it can read both cam and crank signal. It's just weird that the crank reads fine but the cam doesn't. I'm a diesel tech and have worked on many diesels and have seen many weird scenarios. Most crank sensors when they fail won't read a reliable signal like this does. I'm not saying it's not a crank sensor but will the tach still read and still read on the scanner if one fails on these crd's? I'm sure I'm missing something but not sure what. I keep coming back to the no signal sync and no cam sensor reading. I have the factory jeep service manuals as well. I have also put a bore scope in the sensor hole and watched the cam notch rotate while cranking. I pulled the oil filter cap off and made sure the intake cam rotated as well. It cranks fine and sounds good cranking like everything is in time. I'm open to suggestions and welcome any advice.

This is the second new cam sensor I have tried as well.

The mish mash of electronics on the CRD tend to confuse many of the best scan tools.
Disconnect the crank sensor and see if you are still getting a crank sensor reading.

Ok I un plugged the crank sensor and yes it would read but only after the cam sensor mysteriously started to read. The cam sensor now reads about 98 which is about half the cranking speed which would be correct. The crank sensor did code when unplugged. I'll be getting a crank sensor tomorrow if the dealership has one. I hope this fixes it! I've been going crazy trying to get this running again! Thanks for your help. If this doesn't fix it any ideas where to go next besides gas and a match?

I'm assuming the computer or scan tool just calculate the crank speed based on cam when it can't get a true reading? It's just strange that the tach read and the scan tool read a signal when it was plugged in and that the cam would not read. I'll report back when I get a new sensor.

Best place to buy one is at AutoZone Store if you have one close by.
• Autozone Duralast/Crankshaft Position Sensor (Bosch part in box)
• Part Number: SU8492
~$50 bucks, much cheaper than a Mopar dealer and it will be a Bosch part in the Autozone box just like OEM.... :D

Unfortunately our AutoZone doesn't stock that. I ordered one from the dealer, that also doesn't stock it. Will be in tomorrow. I didn't know that the AutoZone part was the same. I don't trust many parts from there to begin with so I didn't think to check first. Thanks though I will remember that in the future.

I put in the new factory crank sensor. Still no start. Waiting on my scan tool to charge but the tach moves and it kinda sounds like it tries to fire but nothing. No smoke or anything. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

Have you checked your fuses? Injectors have a dedicated specific fuse and relay in the PDC box infront of the battery.

EDIT: In mine, it's the only 25 amp mini-fuse in the box.

Yea I've checked and replaced that fuse and several others. I've got 12.4 volts to that one. On both sides

Can we assume you've checked all the grounds and wires to them?

Not just for continuity, but that they are tight and able to carry proper current?

Trying to think of things that would affect all 4 simultaneously. . .

Is your cranking battery voltage well above 12V?
If memory serves, someone had one that would die at 11.something.V because the alternator wasn't working, and the ECM would go bonkers below 12V. Don't remember the details of that one, just remember reading it.

Yea I believe they are all good. It was running great. I pulled it out of the shop and it just died. No warning just died. And it wouldn't re start. I have put new cams and followers and injectors and high pressure pump. Also has the in tank pump and new updated filter head. With the crank sensor un plugged the cam sensor will read rpm, approximately half engine speed. With it plugged in it will not read and doesn't sync. Not sure why but I haven't watched one running to know how they read

I have a charger on it and the voltage stays up pretty good usually above 12v cranking

I have tried bleeding fuel system again and checked injector wiring and grounds. I've checked the block grounds. There were two wires below the pump near the starter. The grounds near the driver's side up by the cowl and the one by the coolant reservoir. Also battery grounds. Any others I've missed? On the scanner I do not get cam and crank sync while cranking and no cam rpm. I do get crank rpm. About 200 rpm. Does anyone know what their crd reads for cam rpm on a scanner?

Have you verified that fuel is getting up to the injectors?

You might be able to use a noid light to see if the injectors are getting the signal from the ECU.
