If it's not spring loaded, how does it hold pressure?
Absolutely no idea!
But that is what they state and drawings to show it.....I also thought at the time that this system cannot work.
I am sure that both the 2002 Service Manual and the newer CRD manuals have the same description....I will check that out but I know that the Part Numbers were the same.
OK the Service Manual from the "2.5_2.8 export diesel" download from
http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ states on page 7-26:
"Hold the cap in your hand top side up.
The vent valve at the bottom of the cap should open.
If the rubber gasket has swollen, preventing the valve from opening, replace the cap.
Hold the cap in your hand, upside down.
If any light can be seen between vent valve and rubber gasket, replace the cap.
Do not use a cap that has a spring to hold the vent shut The 2005 KJ Service Manual states that the cooling cap is located on the coolant pressure bottle for the 3.7L/2.8L Diesel engine and on the radiator for the 2.4L engine.
The cap construction includes.....a
spring loaded valve The 2006 KJ Service manual has a bit of a mess describing the pressure caps but they also state using a
spring-loaded vent valve.
So it seems that a non-spring cap is supposed to be used on the Export 2.5/2.8L Engines.
This is of no major concern then as far as Lost Jeeps is concerned.....I will get onto the Ausjeepoffroad site where they have a lot of these Export models and ask them for their experiences but the Service Manual for these Export models is probably wrong!
I have an Electric Pressure Cooker at home that has a gravity operated valve that allows air to escape past it until there is too much air/steam trying to get through at which stage the valve shoots upwards and closes off the escaping steam. So maybe the Export Models have similar modus of operation where some pressure can escape until the pressure is too high and it forces the un-sprung valve upwards to shut the valve and allow the pressure to build up fully?
