For those not on the facebook group, Dieselguy86 has been working over the last months/year on building a hybrid turbo based on the stock Liberty CRD turbo. It is a GTB2056 turbine wheel(same as the Ram/Jeep Ecodiesel) mated to a custom billet aluminum compressor wheel. It also has a set of GTB20 variable geometry vanes in the exhaust housing in place of the stock GT vanes. The GTB20 vanes offer better aero than the stock vanes. This is all stuffed into a stock Jeep turbo housing so that it is 100% plug-n-play. Downpipe, oil feed/return lines, intake elbow, CAC hoses all bolt right up. Oh, and he taped a 1/8" NPT fitting into the exhaust housing for an EGT gauge which you can see in my pictures.

The GTB20 turbine is a much higher flowing turbine than we have stock yet should offer similar or better spool. Think 250+ hp. The compressor wheel is a billet aluminum 60mm extended tip wheel with a larger inducer than stock. This turbo should easily max out the stock injectors and give those who want more some overhead for honed injectors.

I just got mine a couple weeks ago and finally got around to installing it this last weekend. Installation was the same as a stock turbo for those familiar with that. I would say that start to finish this was a 4-5 hour job(I did it over two days) and I took my time having never done it before. Removing the overflow tank was very helpful.

One thing to mention was that I didn’t have any issues with the turbo flange studs snapping. I’ve heard this was an issue for some. That said, two of the nuts came off no issue and the other two were stuck and the whole nut and stud came out as one. This was fine, I reinstalled them until the stud bottomed out and then just twisted the nut in the tighten direction until it broke free and then they came right off. PB Blaster helped.

The turbo is currently running on GDE’s hot tune with no codes although, it may need some fine tuning on the VNT control tables. Obviously, if you want more power, its going to require custom tuning. My plan, at least initially, is to max things out and then maybe have industrial injection hone my injectors 20-25% for a conservative 250 hp.

Very similar plan here, but you are several steps ahead of my budget-limited process!

Cost is $800 with a good core. Thrust bearing is also upgraded to a large pad one for better wear.

I'm interested, got 101,000 on my stock turbo. That 2500.00 unit from GDE is just too much for my budget.

When i have parts, i can do them in a week right now. If you want yours done, send a $400 deposit, ill order the parts and when they come in, send the turbo in. Pay the remaining $400 when its done and it will ship the same day.

The compressors are machined from billet and can sometimes take awhile to get due to machining schedule. Lately i had to switch sellers to get a faster supply of them and they have been great.

Does the donor have to be a Garrett or do any of the aftermarket ones work (Sasquatch) (Stigan) etc?

Garrett only as it is the best quality of all of them.

The cores will be the hard part of this. You need an OEM core to rebuild, but not too clapped out so it can be rebuilt, but how many of use want to sacrifice a perfectly good working turbo to upgrade?

So we need a narrow window of bad turbos. I had one that I scrapped because I suspected it wasn't useable for any of this, too much grenade.

Still, if we start keeping an eye out maybe collectively we can find some cores.

Ebay seems to have some from time to time, but it's fairly near impossible to trust whether or not they are usable.

Big gains won't be seen without tuning which I have not done yet. I am on a GDE hot tune. There is a kid on the Facebook group who also has one of these plus big injectors from industrial injection that was supposed to get a dyno run in, but I have yet to see it. I imagine he is making upwards of 250 crank since he said that industrial injection "maxed" his injectors and they are somewhere north of 30% over. Just based on GDE claiming 200hp crank with the regular hot tune, that should put him in the 260 hp range if they truly are only 30% injectors.

GDE said 220 hp was the limit of the stock injectors I believe, which is why their Stg 2 turbo kit is rated at 220hp.

There is likely some performance gains from having the freer flowing turbine which would help the engine breath a little better. Basically the turbine should cause less backpressure in the exhaust which means the engine is working less hard to push the exhaust out. Think of it like blowing through a coffee stirrer or blowing through a garden hose.

As long as the bearing hasnt spun, it should be save-able. I have to machine the front cover anyways, so that would more than likely take out the deepest of grooves. The backplate that the front cover is bolted to is replaceable, so that isnt a big deal either. The exhaust housing is pretty durable, it would really have to grenade for that to be damaged but is certainly possible.

I could offer built-from-new turbos, but they would probably be $1,200-$1,300. I feel like crd owners are already forced to pay thousands to fix chryslers negligence, and a turbo isnt a “mod” for reliability so i dont think many would sell.

What would work the greatest would be to have 3 or 4 built-from-cores waiting on the shelf. When someone needs one, they pay for it plus a core charge, swap the new one in and send their old one back, and get their core-charge back.

Just curious if anyone knows if the bottom end of the motor is made from forged parts? Is installing a more powerful turbo a good idea?
