So, while I had the front end apart (went ahead and pulled the rad and AC since the AC wasn't charged and grill already MIA due to earlier deer collision) to replace the timing belt and water pump I figured I'd go ahead and fix a few things that were not functioning correctly like the block heater (melted prong at connector) and glow plugs (original and getting a code). Then block off the EGR and remove the FCV butterfly.

Thanks to the help of those on the forum I did everything with confidence and all went mostly as expected until I got to the glow plugs. I dosed them regularly with various penetrating oils over the weeks I've had the Jeep down. First one snapped right off just above the threads. So I had the top and ceramics out but the shell and tip were still in the head... #2, 3 & 4 came right out no problem.

So I bought a kit off ebay for 8 & 10mm plugs exactly like this one:

But it came with no instructions and no identification of parts. Probably should have sent it back but with the video I figured I could figure it out. I took one of the other old plugs and cut it off right where the problem one broke so I'd know just what I was dealing with and the dimensions.

So far I've only been able to use the 10X1mm tap (that I could have bought separately in town) to restore the threads after buying a 11X32" bit since I couldn't figure out how to successfully use either of their step bits. Now I'm supposed to drill and tap the shell for the threaded puller that will pull the shell out through the hole. But there is not correct size bit and if there was the tap isn't long enough to use.

Now, I'm not knocking the kit - it may not be for this little diesel or I just may not understand how to properly use it.

But the fact remains that I have this metal shell of a glow plug lodged in my head that I want out so I can finally get this heap back on the road. It is drilled out to the thread bottom and rethreaded successfully. Any suggestions? I've read/watched where some tap it on into the chamber and then fish it out the injector with a magnet but I'm not sure if there's enough room in this engine to do that?

I'd rather not pull the head, for several reasons: 1 time 2. money (I hate fixing something and not putting it back better but I really can't afford studs now). Anybody ever been in this situation? I've read plenty of threads where the tip is left in the chamber but not the lower metal housing too...

Well, I've tried everything I know of to no avail.

So, I guess I'll have to remove the head. And while that is off I'll see if I can afford new rockers.

Maybe the youngest doesn't need braces after all...

If you have enough threads you might be able to plug the hole for the broken glow plug of course it could fall onto piston but that happened a lot anyway and you will keep a constant code but it will probably still start ok in your area especially if you replace others with the 5 volt metal ones and keep the 7 volt system. Then you can save up and do ARP and rockers etc later. You can also get rockers on eBay or from vm specialists to save some but make sure they include the lifter portion also some do not I think set about $210 but from europe shipping takes longer. They are made in poland IIRCC

I’ve considered that but it would irritate me to no end to know that I didn’t fix it right...

I’ve even thought about knocking it on in and fishing it out the injector or even JB welding a long bolt in there and ttempting to back it out but I think I better quit while I’m behind, take out another home equity loan and pull the head. Ugg

Finally some good news!

Took the head to my buddy's machine shop. After several attempts he got the offending plug remains out!

Now to start putting it all back together once the new headgasket kit arrives.

Great, happy for you don't forget the Copper Coat that stuff really does the job sealing the head gasket. I think most would actually do ok reusing the old gasket but a lot of work to redo if it leaked. Now you will be better off with the arp s and hopefully new rockers. I highly recommend replacing the exhaust valves at least. A set from vm matori last year was 64 british sterling plus shipping i think it equated to about $120 total but would take 2-3 weeks to get them

Copper Coat both sides of head gasket? I have a new gasket, rockers and head bolts. Couldn't afford the studs but wish I could...

Hey there just ran into a problem while replacing the return line on the CP3. I removed the #1 glow plug for easier access to the quick connect ears. After re-installing the glow plug after I was done my wrench failed causing the glow plug to over torque into the head and thus shearing the hex piece on the glow plug and making removal almost impossible or so I thought. Using an Irwin spiral flute screw extractor and a vice grip plier I was able to remove the plug easily and with minimal damage. Was a relief because everyone that I talked to told me that drilling or head removal was the only way to go. 3k on head removal.

The plug I had was a steel core and the electrode threads into the top of the glow plug. Using the neadle nose vice grip pliers, I proceeded to try to unscrew the top lead connector from the electrode. This didn’t go according to plan the electrode snapped below the threaded piece of the electrode housing leaving a hollow tube going into the head. As I’ve explained the hex piece was broken and fell off once the electrode sheared. Having the hollow cavity to work with Irwin tools makes what they call a spiralflute screw extraction tools with left handed aggressive thread crests that once ightly tapped into the orfice using a hammer, removed the glow plug from the head.
No head removal got the tool from a guy at work $0..
Grainger sells them for less than $20!!
Hope this helps anyone else that runs into this problem.
