Hi all,

This is my first time to change the fuel filter in my 2006 CRD Limited. I got one by Premium Guard from Amazon, but the unit that I received clearly has some loose part inside which is obvious by shaking it of flipping it over quickly. As far as I can tell looking through the openings, the small plastic grate in the very bottom portion of the filter element is loose. Is this normal or is it a defect?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Check with WWDiesel

He not only has an awesome setup himself which includes clear water separator, he sells very reasonably, a mount for a secondary "polishing" filter. I don't recommend that if you don't have an in-tank lift pump though.

Aside from that he's got a chart, that I have but can't find, of details of just about every filter that fits, or can be made to fit, the CRD.

It's hugely helpful, but I'm sorry, I just can't find it tonight. :dizzy:

Defective. Premium Guard used to be International Distributors USA Inc. and I suspect Chinese knock off. Duh my bad he was asking about fuel not oil filter so go for NAPA 3647 or WIX: 33647 or equivalent Mann

sorry papa but he is asking about fuel filter or at least thats the way I read it . None of the fuel filters I have ever used have made any kind of noise like that. It kinda sounds like it could be a check valve in an oil filter though. I would return it.
There are wholesalers that are much cheaper than local auto stores such as Fleet filter that start out with a low price and then give 10 % discount for orders over $100 that essentially covers most of shipping and bigger discounts for higher dollar orders. I personally use the 3647 wix napa gold from them for fuel and the oversized 1515 oil filter and their air filters and a Baldwin BF957 for the 2 micron filter , their transmission filter kit , and they also have the wix base for the 2 micron filter which is something like a 24770 i believe. I usually buy enough filters for about 2 years at a time or whatever it takes to get over discount threshold 20% off for $200 is what i shoot for and that gets $200 down to $160 and about $20 shipping for that size load for total of $180 or so. I know about the arguments against Wix for transmission filter but thats the only one I even question. They also deliver quickly.

If it rattles or has loose parts inside the fuel filter, something is wrong with it; DO NOT USE IT!

Please Note: Installing a higher rated micron filter(s) or a duel filter setup requires having an intank or at least an inline lift pump.

This is the chart Gordon was referring to:
Filters that fit the OEM filter head and use the OEM WIF Sensor Port Thread: M12 x 1.5

If you want to add a clear bowl on bottom of the fuel filter for visible water detection or just simply want to install a better rated micron Primary fuel filter than the poorly rated OEM filter, these are the part numbers. All that is required to use the filters listed below is to change the WIF sensor to a Racor Sensor with Port Thread: ½ x 20 IN
