Post subject:  Accessory Belt noise - Alternator Decoupler Pulley

Hi Folks,

I am on a cross country road trip with my '06 CRD just passing 120k miles. I noticed a noise from serpentine belt and decided to stop for a few days to diagnose and fix the issue. It appears to be an issue with the alternator decoupler pulley as described by several forum members. I was able to source a lifetime warranty remanufactured alternator from big box auto store and have decided to forgo replacing just the pulley in favor of a new alternator.

I am going to replace the belt as well, but I see here that many recommend to replace the belt tensioner too. The local dealer ordered the wrong part a few days ago (supposed to be litens/mopar 5072440AB) and quoted me a really high price from Mopar.

Is there a way to check the wear/play of the belt tensioner before I order the new part? I don't want to spend $300 on a brand new part that I am not 100% sure is bad. I will order it if necessary but wondering if any of you gearheads can advise because the dealer sure can't...

Thanks in advance,

Two things to consider on the belt tensioner:
First is the bearing, if it spins freely and smooth and makes no noise, then the bearing is ok.
Second is the tension spring; they lose tension over time and especially when ran with a bad decoupler bearing on the alternator.
next:
After you install new alternator and serpentine belt, watch the tensioner pulley at idle with the AC on and the AC compressor engaged.
if the tensioner pulley is bouncing up and down, then the tensioner spring has gotten weak and the whole assembly should be replaced.

Best places to purchase are:
IDParts:> https://www.idparts.com/liberty-crd-ser ... -2826.html (ON SALE $129.50)
(Direct from the OE manufacturer Litens, made in Germany)
or
Sasquatch Parts:> https://shop.sasquatchparts.com/product ... -2-8l-crd/
(revised design tensioner with a stronger pulley $160.00)

Thanks for the info! As time was of the essence, I ordered the OE Litens part from local dealer at invoice price, somehow still twice the price from Sasquatch or ID. Everything is running smoothly and the old tensioner was crusty and loose.

glad you got it taken care of. FYI for future or anyone else looking, Advance Auto carries a Litens pulley that fits the CRD for $50-60 last I check and had to buy, they have those 20-30% off coupons all the time too.
