Post subject:  crd is making a rymthic swish sound in 4 hi
and it increases with speed. the sound is there in part-time 4x4 but less pronounced. doesn't do it at all in 2 wheel drive. is this a common problem?
it sounds like a rhythmic rubbing sound.

Have you checked the rear CV joint on the forward prop shaft? (the transfer case end of the Front Diff drive line.) They are a frequent failure item.

does the drive shaft only turn in 4x4 mode?

No, its always turning. Its live with the front axle as there is no disconnect in the front axle.

that leads me to believe it's the cv joint in the shaft.

I've gotten that sound in 4wd with sand or mud in the front driveline like he mentioned above. Surprisingly it was only notable under a load (in 4wd). They have rebuild kits for under $100 I think

It's always turning, but it's only under stress when in 4wd.

thanks, I put it in 4 fulltime on pavement today and nothing, no swish, swish , nothing. guess I will do more testing tomorrow in fulltime and part-time

Don't do part-time on pavement or anything solid. Mud, sand, or very loose gravel should prevent binding.
