the neighbor related tale of woe---wife's 2005 crd coasted to stop--no crank no restart

Ouch.
Nothing salvageable there.
I hope you are able to find a replacement engine.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh that's ugly :grim:
Neither he or wife bothered to mention the sound like a dumpster bin being dropped, while the Jeep flipped up on her nose, spun around like a top, and came to rest on her roof with X's over her headlights...?

That didn't just drop a valve, it dropped it completely through a piston into the crankcase where the rest of the short block components played whack-a-mole with it till it left sideways, and some even chased it out, or tried to.

That's a total loss of an engine. Wonder if it didn't warn anyhow or maybe warnings were just ignored?

force associated with this degree of metal carnage must have been accompanied by more than a gentle glide to stop

Not much left usable on his engine, probably the intake/cams and CP3 injection pump? :grim:
Turbo is probably even toast if it had a lot of damage from metal passing through it?
Mostly scrap metal....

I just had a little more time to peruse your photos.

. . . . .

On a positive note, it appears you may be able to salvage some valve spring locks and a keeper or two.

I particularly liked the one showing how the #1 piston removed 3 valves, then attempted to re-install them all into the same intake port, but only succeeded with 2 :!:

if you look closely at the molded hose connecting air filter to turbo compressor in my pics you will note
fracture of crankcase breather hose--
this would suggest a portion of intake air would enter turbo un-filtered

my guess would be 25% of charge air over an estimated 4 years would have bypassed any filtration

when this dirty charge air mingled with egr gas---a form of lapping paste was created which likely had no good effect on precision components---emphasis --lifters rockers valve stems

in my short time as a CRD owner--breakdown of combustion air charge circuit is a recurring pattern linked with some form of major engine failure

I noticed that. Which, in addition to other things indicating poor maintenance, would make me hesitant to use ancillary parts such as turbo, CP3 and 2 possible injectors, except as cores, or to patch up a fully failed unit on a high mileage engine.

Eddit
However, it's the Limited version, which at least has higher value whether you choose to part out, or repair, so there's that.

After going back and perusing the pictures again, I do believe that is the worst carnage on one of these engines I have seen pictures of so far!

I agree!!!

I spun a bearing and threw a rod through my 1962 CJ-3B F head back in the early 80’s and watched the pieces dance down the highway in my rear view mirror but the end result was NOTHING like that.

That must have been some horrible horrible noise!

How many miles on the engine?

Good lord-n-butter.... "coasted to a stop" might be true, but they are absolutely leaving out the cacophony of noises that would have transpired immediately prior to that point!
I've had a catastrophic engine failure happen under me, and it was certainly NOT a quiet event. Rocks in a blender don't even begin to approximate what that must have sounded like.

I hope you didn't pay him much for it, but I suspect you paid a lot more than you now wish you had. Looking at the piston skirts, that engine was BADLY overheated at least a couple times, those skirts are scraped to crap. Maybe that happened as the other two pistons were leaving their assigned duty stations, but I have to say... The HOLE in the #2 piston says that this engine maybe was operating poorly for a great deal of time before the valve failure. To have such a complete piston destruction happen in one cylinder after a valve drop - I can see that happening. To have the damage translate into the adjacent cylinder WITHOUT a valve failure there... Someone did something to this engine with extreme prejudice. Or it was running at redline when it failed. Munching the valves and stuffing them all back into one hole, I've seen that before. I've also seen where the engine would CONTINUE TO RUN as long as the damage was contained enough to allow the complete rotation, but obviously that cylinder would be dead. But what killed the #2 and put that hole in the piston? THAT is the kicker for me.

california crd with 113K miles

leather interior like new

new goodyear treads

paid $1200 I have never driven a jeep crd and witnessed only one running

I took a flyer on an ebay unknown 2.8 vm--it sits in my garage now--here is that link

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-8L-JEEP-LIBE ... true&rt=nc

replacement motor is undergoing diagnostics now--was in obvious major crunch with accessories on both right and left sides of block damaged

I will pull cam housing and check lifters and rockers

Sounds like you paid a fair price for a non-running CRD, even if it only dropped a valve compared to this massive failure you would still basically need a used engine.

The used engine you got might be a little beat up, but everything from your other engine should be able to replace that, also thats a GREAT price on an engine for one of these, overall I would say I think you lucked out paying a fair price for the Jeep, and a great price for the engine.

Might be a bit of work, but you really lucked out with that engine.

Those prices are better than I thought, and that engine doesn't look too bad at all - the accessories aren't the worst to swap around anyway. It will be a fair bit of labor but I think you might get back a running vehicle out of the parts you have.

When you pull the engines apart - Put back a two-hole head gasket, new valves, ARP studs, and obviously all the upgrades. New 5v glow plugs, complete EGR delete, new rockers and a new timing kit, and you will have a fresh and functional engine in no time.

If you need help on this - it sounds like you are fairly handy anyway - I'm the traveling CRD mechanic and I plan to be out in Cali in a few weeks. I would be happy to stop by and lend some expertise if you want it. Email is preferred (button below) b/c the PM system on the forum doesn't always notify me for some reason.
