I think Harbor Freight should sponsor me. Their transmission jack, jack stands, and hydraulic jack (as well as many hand tools) made this all possible :)

It is all back in now and works fine !

Upgrades include : Suncoast Torque Converter, upgraded pump springs (TCC Accumulator, Sonnax Pressure) in a newer style reman'ed Mopar fluid pump, TransGo HD2 Shift Kit ( including the heavy duty snap ring put in the input drum), the Sonnax Line Pressure Booster, and a LubeLocker reusable gasket.

What is the process for removing the pump cover and replacing the pump?

After transmission is out, remove converter, then remove the one or two snaprings holding pump cover on. (New pump version has only one snapring at outer edge of cover, the older version has two snaprings; that same outer ring and an inner ring around pump hub).

Then remove valvebody. This allows a long shanked screwdriver or rod to fit through a hole on inside of case and the pump cover can be tapped gently out (towards bellhousing) from inside the case.

The pump has 6 bolts holding it in the case, after removing those bolts the pump pulls right out.

Place new pump in position and torque the bolts to 250 in-lbs (20.8 ft-lbs).

Place new pump cover centered in place ,be sure outer edge o-ring is in place in pump cover and center pump cover seal is installed. (This is the obvious external difference in the old style and new style pumps. New will have the center seal in the cover, old style had the seal in a central pump hub). Be sure to wet the o-ring and seal with ATF or better yet, with Assemblee Goo. Press pump cover evenly into it's seat wth your hands...far enough to reveal slot for snapring. Ensure snapring seats all the way around.

Enjoy

While transmission and transfer case were out I took the opportunity to change the tcase fluid and extend the transmission and tcase vent hoses to the engine compartment by the brake master cylinder.
