Driving home from work today I was thinking about posting a picture of my odometer when I finally hit 200k (I'm at 197k). I actually would have hit it a while ago, but the rear wheel sensor has gone out twice, so I've put close to 10k miles without recording. I was thinking of what I would say when I posted with pride - original owner, original engine, trans, turbo, valves, lifters, head gasket, GDE engine and trans tune most of the way - oh and the original TORQUE CONVERTER. There was my mistake.

Within 30 seconds of that thought, I pulled out into traffic with a little bit of accelleration, huge double jerk into 2nd gear, huge double jerk into 3rd gear. Huge double jerk into 4th gear, then a smooth 5th gear. I pass into 57 MPH and no T/C lockup. It revs and revs and it won't lock up.

I think I blew the T/C clutch. It doesn't make any noises or smell funny on the outside, but it's shifting very sluggishly, and the fluid smells a little burned. Filters were replaced a few years ago when I had my trans cooler / condenser coil replaced. I let it cool down, and drove the rest of the way home. It wouldn't lock up in 4th, but I did get it to lock once in 5th, but the whole Jeep felt like I was dragging a blue whale down the road with the trans constantly searching for gears and reving higher than usual. It also ran cooler than usual by two ticks on the temp gauge, so I'm wondering if the lines leading to the trans cooler are clogged with clutch thereby preventing the heat transfer to the regular radiator.
I don't see myself getting rid of this tractor, but I'm not sure when I'll have the time to put it back together with a new trans.

The moral of the story is don't think about your Jeep while driving your Jeep.

Oy! That's bad news for me. I rarely think of anything else while driving it!
No expert here, but surely you've checked the fluid level?
If your fluid is actually burned, it will have lost some lubricity, and being electronically controlled, the solenoid valve body could have sticky moving parts. A full service, line and cooler flush, and new fluid would seem to be worth a try before dropping a new trans-sized wad.

Yes, thanks, I will be driving to a trusted shop to see if they can flush it out. The trans has been a little slippery for a while, so I've driven it pretty slow. The fluid is full and it was changed (not flushed) with new filters about two years ago when my trans cooler cracked and was replaced.

It was just an amazing moment in my 13 year history with my Jeep to be thinking of how well it's been doing in it's old age and 30 seconds after I think specifically of the T/C it calls it quits.

Hey I know this is an old thread but, certainly would not want anyone to get the wrong idea!
Not exactly sure what his intent was by this statement:

The transmission cooler is NOT inside the radiator on a CRD Jeep.
Therefore transmission fluid temperatures should have negligible effect on engine coolant temperatures.
