On the same salvage jeep that is using tons of fuel I said PO reassembled it but they di not put fan or some of accessory pulleys on. Now I think I know another reason they gave up. When I tried to put the driver side idler pulley on the bolt would not start in by hand and it was trying to start a little crooked so I assume they stripped it at least some. On a pic I can see some damage of leading threads in the hole the bolt threads are normal.

The interesting part is that these are left hand threads. Also I had not noticed before that this idler is in the bracket that holds fuel pump alternator and a/c compressor and it is not cast iron/steel like the other idler is bolted into. I guess I didn't really notice this because I work from above and don't remove front cowling etc. I checked threads at a local NAPA ( they didn't even have a thread gauge just the male and female yes racks like at lowes etc.) and I think it is a M10 x 1.5. Of course they didn't have a left hand thread tap not even able to order one so I was concerned it might be very hard to find and expensive. Surprise! there were several on Amazon but only one or two that wouldn't take a couple of weeks to receive so I ordered one that should get here today.

Remember just a timesert etc would be a lot more complicated because if use original pulley has to be the same diameter bolt . I think the threads can be cleaned up or at least I hope so and I hope I ordered the correct size tap. Here is the one I ordered:

I will let you know if it works. Cross my fingers :goink:

I wouldn’t consider that idler pulley to be a critical item.
So if you had to, just get a slightly shorter belt.

I might have to but would rather not and there is a lot involved in remove and replace the whole bracket also. It is definitely a possibility though if can't fix it relatively easy otherwise.

Well I got the tap in and it went in very easily and put the idler pulley on and back in business even much less smoke and looks like a little bluish like oil smoke now. However there is a little louder than usual knock. I hope its not a rod knocking but has pretty good power etc. will run it some and see what happens.
