Hi Gang, update to my Coolant leak. the spring clamp on a heater line turned out to NOT be the problem. so today for the first time I have spotted coolant dripping on the ground. Its dripping off the bell housing on the oil filter side. So here are the possibilities I have come up with.. its a leaking freeze plug. If it has one on the rear of the block or head. and thats the question. Is there a freeze plug at the rear of the head or block ?? If yes.. what are the chances its the leak.... Ok.. Possibility number two. Its the head gasket.. Despite zero signs of head gasket failure. Done the blue fluid test, cold engine test and a cooling system pressure test. Do you think that is possible to leak coolant right out the back and down on to the bell housing ?? Possibility number three... the block is cracked at the rear of the engine. I have another bottle of Dye coming on Sunday. Will pour that in to see what turns up. Can you think of any other possible causes for coolant to leak onto the bell housing.. Note : this is a leak I have been trying to find for the last three months. Someone of FB suggested it may be leaking where the thermostat bolts to the head. so I changed out the thermostat as it wasn't working anyway. its working now. I suspect the increase in temperature and system pressure finally brought this leak out to be found. Thanks Clancy... |

Make sure there are no leaks on the coolant hoses connected to the coolant tank that is bolted to the firewall. The oil cooler is also on the passenger side of the engine block. There is a freeze plug on the back of the head as pictured below. A cracked head or leaking head gasket is also possible but highly unlikely.  A pressure test with UV dye and a UV light will be your best bet to pinpoint leak. Rear of engine:

wwdiesel, thank you for the picture. It has really helped out a lot. from the picture am I correct that the lower freeze plug actually has Engine oil behind it ?? I was able to get a light an mirror situated so I could see the freeze plug in the rear of the head. looks good no issues. In another picture I have from a facebook poster I see the other freeze plug. So if that in fact does have oil behind it and not coolant Our only other possibility is the block is cracked. its ok to tell me I'm wrong. I have a " selfie " stick coming tomorrow so I can get my phone up in there to take some pictures. for a look at what's really going on. I was really hoping it was coolant behind plug number two. I fear the worst on this one. |

The lower freeze plug circled in blue is the end of a common oil gallery in the block. There are threaded access ports to this, back to front, on the exhaust side of the engine, as well as internal supply channels to critical systems. |

I had a leak in this area that turned out to be from the heater hose . Just another thought and much easier fix. Could of course also be the heater core. |

Only remember one other reported block crack on here. I agree with Sam, grind out crack and Tig weld it. Where are you located? I have a complete spare engine minus the turbo. |
