The time has come for me to take the :JEEPIN: down for a commie Kali smog check. Some help might be needed to get the smog cert.

In summary, I need to get the ECU to clear the EGR incomplete and maybe try to lower the fuel delivery to reduce smoke on the PUFF test.

Details below ....

Pretext

2005 with 118k miles
Weeks full egr
Nicks stage one full delete DYI tune
The jeep has been sitting in storage for over a year.

Round one ..... charge battery start and drive to the smog shop

Visual good ( all stock smog parts in place ) :ROTFL: . The tech took over 40 minutes with a flashlight inspecting with the engine cover on.
OBD code check GOOD, no fault codes or incomplete data stored

FAILED the visual smoke test ( I should have changed the tune file on the ecu :!: )

I was instructed to get a tune up ...lol and bring it back in for a Re check after a full service.

So, I took the jeep home and did some minor preventive maintenance... just because

New tune ( Nicks stock egr delete ) this should have helped the "puff" test ( more on this below)
OIL
air filter
Fuel filter
Seafoam hot injector soak
diesel Kleen
5 gallons of fresh fuel (started with 1/4 Tank @ a year old)

Put about 50 miles on the jeep just because ... hoping to get the injectors some exercise.

TEST #2 FAIL !
Puff test PASS ( smog tech said he was on the fence ) Nicks stock tune did help but there was still a small cloud during the test

? Before I ask for a custom tune, has anyone mechanically adjusted the fuel pump to lower the amount of fuel ?

The jeep failed due to the ECU indicating EGR incomplete. NO codes but the scanner is showing incomplete after 100 miles of driving.

I followed a couple drive cycle guides (google search ) but that did not clear the ECU.

?Does anyone have the CRD drive cycle procedure ?

Thanks guys

I didnt realize how much I missed driving the Jeep

T

drive cycles are temperature related and not mileage related. are you confirming you are coming up to full operating temp? if you have thermostat issues you never will. i cant recall the # required but its only a few. if you buy a $10 bluetooth obd code reader and download the torque app, it will tell you when all diagnostics are ready before you schedule another appt.

you can also try scheduling one with a cali smog ref since you've failed a couple of times. they are cheaper and actually more reasonable in my experience, its the shops that are more worried about losing their licence on passing a polluter.

All good advice

I have done the following

5 cold starts
all 5 minute min idle two in drive ac on rear defrost .. allows the jeep to come up to temp faster. Maybe I need to double check the normal operating temp, I might be running to cold .....

I have a obd2 reader, I will be able to verify when the egr clears ... I confirmed last night still not complete.

SMOG ref is last resort IMO, the tech spent 40 minutes looking under the engine cover ( I have the full weeks kit ) not sure I want to chance a second visual check with a savy SMOG Ref :juggle:

Some folks have had some success with emissions tests by filling up the tank with biodiesel.
Make sure the engine is fully warmed up prior to testing and do a couple hard accelerations to blow the carbon out.

If you aren't able to solve this through any traditional methods, send me an email. I might have something that can help.
