What does "programming the injectors" theoretically do?

Common rail diesel fuel injectors require calibration during manufacture or overhaul on a specialised diesel injection test rig to produce a data code relating to the characteristics of each individual injector (variances).
This data code in most cases is referred to as the C2i code, IMA/IQA code or QR code depending on the injector manufacturer.
Each injector is provided with a perspective data code corresponding to its individual flow characteristic as found during bench testing when either new or rebuilt.
This data code is programmed into the engine control unit (ECM) identifying to which cylinder the injector is fitted.
This data code allows the engine control module to correct the pulse duration applied to each individual injector to maintain optimum performance.
Fitment of rebuilt injectors or new replacement injectors requires this information to be coded into the engine control unit.

Bottom line:
Basically it is fine tuning of the fuel injection event by the ECM to ensure each cylinder receives the optimal amount of fuel.
Engine will still run and perform without the above data being programed, but may run a little more smoothly and achieve a little better fuel economy if it is done.
Remember the ECM already has the data codes installed for the OEM injectors and the ECM will still use them on any replacement injectors if not reprogrammed with this information.
Your choice as to do it or not.... :juggle:

Ya, What he said ^^^^

Save your money on the injector programming, GDE has said it isn't that important. I'd also be shocked if the dealer droids knew how to do it anyway.

Weird because When I asked Keith about it he said that he could do it for me if I wanted (because I was marginally sure the dealership was going to give me this blank look when I asked). Luckily I've been dealing with this dealership for a long time and they let me in the back to "guide" them through the process... Fun stuff when you have to tell the mechanic what is wrong and how to fix your rig... They only charged me $69 but the experience was priceless.

Glad you were able to get it done and have a "friendly" dealership - that is a rare thing indeed.

As far as Keith, maybe he has evolved his opinion about the need for this, I don't know. The last time I talked to him about it was years ago, and he said at that point that he could do it, but that it wasn't that critical to the efficiency overall. I'm waiting on a set of injectors right now to be rebuilt, I'll ask the shop when I pick them up about this - and maybe have Keith do it if there is a new coding.

Well, once again I am doing this procedure. :banghead:
Last fall I started loosing power and noticed oil in my coolant. Pulled a couple of injectors and there was coolant on them. I hate cast aluminum heads! They should never be used on a diesel! They crack! Diesels should be able to go more than 220k. At least I got 4 years and 60k miles of enjoyment out of her.

Either I pay $2,300 in parts to fix her up or probably $12,000 to R&D/fab/install a Cummins R2.8 to bolt up to the stock tranny. Unfortunately no one builds an adapter plate for the stock tranny and Cummins is too stupid to build this motor as a drop in replacement.

Update: so I got it all apart. One thing I noticed right away when I was detorqueing the head bolts was the 4 outside bolts on the exhaust side were not as tight. This is what caused my head gasket to blow out. The head was fine. This sucks because there is no easy way to retorque the head bolts after break in (like a Cummins). Apparently this needs to be done or your screwed sometime down the road. I hate aluminum heads! :banghead:

Are you using OEM stretch to yield head bolts or ARP head studs?

And they were loose? Very surprised!
Have heard of OEM STY bolts found under torqued, but not the ARP studs.

Well @wwdiesel, since it appears you and I are the only two people left who follow this forum, I'll give you an update on this. Got the heads back from the machine shop. There are 3 cracks. All between an intake and exhaust valve.

Image

Though it passed the pressure test I suspect this is why I was getting coolant on my injectors. Which was my first sign of something wrong.

Image

So... I ordered a new(not remain.)head last night. It's just money, right? I can always make more. I couldn't, in my heart, throw it back together and resell it knowing someone else would be devastated when it had an epic failure in short order. Besides, I've done this twice already and I'm getting pretty good at it! :ROTFL:

I think the reason I don't get the life out of these little tractors as others do is I'm pretty hard on it. She tows my boat a lot and The Dalles get really hot and there is a steep 2000' elevation change from town to my house so combining towing, uphill and 100F + weather with my AC on is just too much work for her. So I think I will retire her to a simple life of highway commuting. Hopefully she'll last a couple hundred thousand more miles.

How to Post & Share Pictures on LOSTJeeps Forum

You can post & share pictures and images on LOSTJeep.com, you first have to join and use a picture sharing/hosting service like PostImage or one of the many *others listed below.

Should look something like this: [url>=https://web address "link" of shared picture<[/img]

*Some of the most popular image hosting *sites/services where you can upload and store images so you can share the images/photos on a forum:
*There are more available, but these are some of the more well-known ones.

Were you able to source a new head here or did you have to go across the pond?

Posting updates on Facebook because I can't post pictures here. This forum is so old, it's like using dial- up internet. Best of luck.

I have posted many times that the CRD engine should have an iron head. Has anyone ever found out if V.M. Motori offers and iron head for the R425 and R428 engines? Does anyone know if there is a foundry that specializes in pouring iron cylinder heads and blocks?

I sent you an e-mail message through this forum. Please take the time to check it out.
