Congrats, but what a PITA intermittent faults are. Has it ever died while running?

Absolutely.
That’s what led up to this whole mess.
Would start up and drive, then suddenly die and set the p2294 code. Wouldn’t restart and had to be towed home.
Try again later and everything seems fine. Drive it, dies, maybe eventually restart, then die again and repeat.
Always the p2294 code.

All wiring tested good.
So I determined that there was a intermittent open inside the solenoid and replaced it.

Yeah, that's my experience with the solenoid also, it shuts it off immediately, but I never had trouble getting them started after I got the solenoid working again.

Dare I say, this will be my final update...

I got it running

But I had to pull some trickery.

Along with bleeding the fuel rail, I had to convince the ECU to stop setting the p2294 code. I’m not sure how but I somehow stumbled across the right sequence of clearing the code and key off/on and finally it stopped setting the code.
But still wouldn’t start.
Then I had to unplug the fuel quantity solenoid and the fuel rail pressure sensor and finally it started. Wow! Lotta smoke? Your neighbors call the fire dept?
I plugged everything back in and took it for a test drive.
It ran great.

Suddenly all was right with the world.
Or, at least within my driveway

Sounds like you had the "other" FPS problem.
GDE had some that the valve pintle would momentarily "stick" somehow, causing it to die, but then test good.

No smoke.
I kinda went through this before a couple years ago when I was having problems with the FQS and fuel pressure sensor.
Disconnecting either of those two puts it into limp mode with reduced fueling.
And disconnecting the FQS forces all fuel to be regulated by the fuel rail solenoid.
It was a desperate attempt by me to wake up the system.

Another thing I noticed was that after I replaced the fuel rail solenoid and during my attempts to get the engine started, I could sometimes hear the rail solenoid clicking loudly.
I thought this was very odd.
So maybe the solenoid had become sticky from sitting in the package for so long and it just needed some exercise to function properly.

On the clicking, mine did that too. I also never did find out why, as it quit doing it before I could track it down.

Correct on the FQS, as it forces the CP3 to pump as much fuel as possible into the rail.
Disconnecting my fuel pressure sensor doesn't exactly result in limp mode but it feels like it.
As near as I can tell, when the pressure sensor can't tell the ECM what the current pressure is, the ECM has to "guess", and it seems to guess high.
