Hi all,

I have a neglected and unused CRD that has not been moved very often in the past year. When I do take it out for a ride, it will start off very slowly, and then after driving for 10-15 minutes it seems to drive fine. The tranny has given the normal hard shift when downshifting , so I attempted to do the quick learn procedure. It seemed to work well, and two days later I moved it again and it was back to the usual sluggish self.

I know I have a valve boost code showing (need to track that down), but there must be something else causing this?

What codes are you seeing? Post them and you may get some responses.
Not familiar with a "valve boost code"?

Have you tried cleaning or replacing the MAP sensor?
They can be problematic...and cause running issues.

Replace with GM part number 55206797 :google:
cost ~$20 bucks, is a Bosch part and will work just fine. Many on this forum are currently running them.

It was replaced not to long ago, but if it was the MAP sensor that was dirty, why would it improve after driving for a bit, then two days later be an issue again?

Status can change with temperature as the sensor measures both intake pressure and temperature.

Focus on it runs sluggish for 10-15 minutes and then runs fine and ask what happens during that time frame:
1. if ambient temps are not too low then the engine has warmed up to operating temp in about that time frame so what would cause it to the sluggish on a cold engine?
2. consider the possibility that the turbo is not operating correctly early in the drive cycle after sitting for a while. Common cause combined with the underboost code suggest leakdown of the vacuum reservoir due to bad solenoid. Go to http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/ and download my tech tips PDF. Scroll down bookmarks to "Vacuum reservoir solenoid bypass to check for low boost", near end, follow instructions. If problem goes away replace indicated part.

Have you serviced it since storage? Old cold motor oil could be interfering with turbo performance until it warms enough.

Thanks guys, I will check those things out.

Do you think this would also account for the hard downshifts from the tranny?

An old or dirty air filter will cause some problems...ez and cheap to check. Also check turbo hose connections for loose fitting or tube hose damage.

I don't know if it's the specific cause of that or not, but an auto trans will perform differently when the fluid is cold vs up-to-temp.

Hi all,

Finally getting back to this on some downtime. I tried the vacuum reservoir solenoid bypass as suggested above - no change. I took off the hoses from the intercooler, and also the air to turbo hose. Cleaned them up, none look cracked. Turbo spins freely, no side to side play (whew!).

I pulled off the plastic vacuum hose that goes from the solenoid to the metal pancake device above the turbo and just below the coolant reservoir (sorry, name escapes me right now)....did a poor man's vacuum test as I couldn't find my vacuum pump. The hose itself seems to hold a vacuum fine.

I do have my vacuum pump now, so what would be next for checking the vacuum, and how would I go about doing so?

Thank for all the advice so far, very much appreciated. :)

I've experienced the sluggish engine after haven't been run for a long time.
Basically its because its taking time for the system to build vacuum.
Its either a leaking vacuum reservoir, a bad check valve, or a bad vacuum solenoid.

Start your vacuum tests with the engine running, connecting your gauge to the line that attaches to the turbo actuator. Then test other vacuum lines as you work your way back away from the turbo. Take notes to record places where vacuum is higher or lower.

I just had similar symptoms on my 06, as I was checking travel on wastegate rod with a vacuum pump I noticed it wasn’t moving much, after cycling it several times @ 60lbs with mighty pump, started up and engine light went off after a minute (0299 code) test drive good, stopped smoking and I could hear turbo working, simple fix for once!

Tip.
Be sure and spray all the linkages with some PB blaster or similar good penetrating oil while you work the linkages back and forth stop to stop. (Engine OFF!)

As a side note, I actually had the adjusting nut come loose on my turbo actuator after an approximately 10 mile offroad trip on some Arizona washboard dirt roads. The vibration from the roads loosened the HVAC fan under the passenger dash panel until it completely fell out and seized up against the housing and blew the resistor pack. It must have also loosened the actuator nut enough that it slowly moved over the next few weeks until I started getting overboost codes. I had to back it off and bring it back up slowly until I was getting about 18psi boost under hard acceleration at ~5600ft elevation. It is running much better now. That doesn't explain the erratic behavior you are having but it would be worth checking since it only takes about 10 seconds to reach down in and try to turn that nut both ways by hand.

The line from the firewall pulls a vacuum of 25Hg, as does the line that exits the box.
There seems to be no vacuum after that. The vacuum line runs to the actuator will also hold a vacuum.
