Help/Advice Needed with glow plugs

Hi,

I replaced my OEM 7v Ceramic glow plugs earlier in the year with new etecno1 7v Steel glow plugs. Handled carefully and torqued properly.

I recently moved to Nebraska and in dire need to get a decent set of glow plugs. These etecno1 7v glow plugs will start losing effectiveness considerably somewhere around 20-25F.

Etecno1 glow plugs are not "instrumented", so times can not be changed with a tune.

Are there any European companies out there other than etecno1 to have replacement glow plugs for our 2.8 CRD engines?

Is it possible to manually override/operate these glow plugs to extend pre heat time?

Cycling key does not help. I've heard from credible source.

My last resort is to use ether and/or Lithium Ion Jump Starter.

eTecno1 and Bosch both make 5v plugs.

Many of us are running the 5v plugs with 7v programming, with very good results, and as far as I know, no failures.
Mine have been working great going on 2 years now.
Much better performance, and no other modifications needed.
my sig below has the part number linked.
IDParts carries both 5 and 7 volts, both eTecno1 and Bosch.
I went with the eTecno1 because their heating tip is larger diameter, inducing more heat more quickly than the Bosch (in theory).

That sounds great. How low of temperature do they work well at before performance is lost? (No block heater is what I'm interested in)
I know many factors come into play, but generally speaking.

Mine starts right up with block heater well. But many places I don't have that option.

I'm also running the 5V metallic Bosch Plugs.

Here in CO I've noticed that its about below 10 degrees that I have to struggle a little to get it started.

The lowest mine have operated in, is negative 15 Fahrenheit. No block heater used. It started once first try then died after about 3 seconds. The second try it started and continued running as any would expect of a very cold diesel. I consider this very good performance.
This cold of weather usually only lasts 2-3 weeks in this location, so no need for any grid heaters IMO.

Makes me wonder if I should even bother putting the 7v etecknos in my jeep. This thing spends money just sitting still.

To the OP... Try cycling the key/glowpluglight several times before cranking on your cold starts. I think I read that helps.

Don't, 5V Bosch are far better.

OK.

My ceramic glow plugs worked fine but luck doesn't last forever.

No it doesn't. Unfortunately, this is newer tech. Doesn't work like that.

My 2004 VW golf tdi (BEW engine) you could, but not here.

5v plugs, Stock module, original 7v flash.

Just 5V, no module, no flash, mine is one of the oldest 2005s out there, way before F37 and the glow plug recall.

Key cycling does make a difference in starts, hard to have quantitative data for you, but I have lots of qualitative experience from watching morning temps and starts.

Is there a video or step-by-step on how to R&R glow plugs? Torque OBD II Scanner showing fault codes 1263 & 1265.

Best or special tools that will help. Techniques? Couldn't find anything on YouTube or any searching. Only a couple lame videos.

Just ordered 4, Bosch 5v from id.

Mine: '05 w/ a factory reman engine at 68K - now at 134K. It's always been garaged. Bought it when it had 98K, but have all the receipts from previous owner. Previous engine granaded from what I read of the Dealer report / invoice ($9700) :shock:

so I'm assuming had new GP's.

Read the chatter about broken GP's. Got me a little spooked, so I want to know of any precautions or using stuff like PB Blaster before starting.

Kroil is the best penentrating "oil" I have used.

Let them soak. Some recommend gentle heat cycles. Let them soak, did I say that.

If something goes "bad" there are tool sets to help get anything "broken" out, some use the injector port to get bad stuff out of the cylinder worst case.

Let them soak.

Update:

I've installed the Bosch 5v plugs and it has made a huge difference. It is definitely better, but still need to use block heater or ether depending on situation.

Are you disabling the glow plugs when spraying? Using ether with glow plugs and grid heaters can lead to unfortunate outcomes.
