I found it helpful to pull the rearmost 2 rows, and all of the outermost studs from there, and re-install them prior to torquing the nuts.

Greatly reduces the results of machining variation going through the head passages, and allows the rear to settle in first without hanging up on the firewall.

To OP:
Idon't see how you could clear the firewall with the head high enough to start on to the ARP studs, but if you can great . I haven't tried it. Guess I may have not done it that way because of the problem with clearance of the intake.

My father in law and I had no issues of it hanging up on the firewall. Slid right down. It's all together and sounds better than when I first bought it. After I did the first timing belt the motor sounded way better than it was before the new belt. When I first got it after first starting it the idle was so rough it was like it was starting at 3 degree Fahrenheit.

Somehow we broke the fuel return line bridge but my father in law was able to modify it and fix it. So far no coolant, oil or fuel is leaking. Only driven about 10 miles so far but it's dry and I couldn't be happier.

The main issue I had was with all 18 studs in place, there was so much machine variation in the block tapping, that when it extended to the ends of the studs, they were so far different from the holes through the head that they couldn't be made to start. I had to start pulling studs out until there were few enough to fit through the head, lower the head on, and put the other studs back in.

Would have saved alot of time to have followed Geordi's advice from the beginning.

That sucks. Sounds like we got lucky then.

I didn't put any ARPS in just used the Head guides on front passenger side and rear drivers side and then started all ARPs by hand and if needed shift head a little but I didn't need to. All three done have had no Head issues since. I hope the new valves on 2 of them keep them running another 200K
