so lifter got away while pulling intake cover and fell inside lower area openings of head, After pulling head off , I had spotted lifter partially entered into right front oil passage . After setting head down I reached for the lifter and seen it disappear down the oil passage with a thud followed by a splosh sound . I grabbed another lifter and looked at it and realized the only way that could even fit into that oil hole is for that small stainless retainer on the lifter to have been missing all together . Well there it is !
Am I lifting motor and pulling pan , or removing motor and pulling pan ? Hoping for some experienced input on this .

With any luck you can pull it back up with a long mechanic's maganite, but, if you're sure it splashed then its safely in the pan and as long as several verifications of turning it over by hand don't reveal any binding, then I would forget about it. Also you'll want to verify that it's too big too fit through the drain plug, as that's a possible but unlikely way to fish it out also. If it landed near the plug, and it wont fit through the hole, then you might be able to pass it up to a second maganite up top, BUT, you risk getting it lodged in the balance shaft assembly, and then you would have to pull the engine.
I would make certain it's in the pan bottom (big strong speaker maganite might work) one way or another before starting the engine.
And I wouldn't pull the motor if it is in the pan...

If you drop the front crossmember you can get the pan off without too much trouble. Much easier than removing the engine. Remove front drive shaft from the diff and get some threaded bar to replace the crossmember fixing bolts and can then use nuts on the threaded bar to raise and lower the crossmember. From memory I think the engine needs to be supported by a crossbar across the inner guards and a sling of some sort.Engine mounts need to be unbolted. Steering rack also needs to be unbolted and in my case that was enough to allow the crossmember to drop enough. Can't remember anything else that I did to remove pan. Since the crossmember is not accurately positioned on the subframe rails, you need to accurately mark its original position with a scriber or paint pen or something so you can get it in the original position. This should save you from needing a wheel alignment. If I think of anything else, I will do another edit. Four so far.

Thanks Senatorjohn, Not moving to fast lately ,but i like your plan on dropping oil pan and will let you know how it goes soon . I just couldn't live with knowing that the lifter could get me into trouble down the road .

If you're sure it's all in the oil pan, don't worry about it. Other than the stainless clip you could probably get a cow magnet and get it close enough to the drain plug to grab it. Check another clip to see if a magnet will work on it (there is stainless that will be attracted to a magnet).
