CRD Trasmission Tunes?

Currently my CRD has the GDE ECO engine and transmission tune on it. Since then I've lifted it, larger tires, ARP head studs, EGR full delete etc. Now I want power and better shifting. I emailed GDE and it seems they want full price to swap from their ECO to Power transmission tune. Are there other options?

I would guess your least expensive alternative would be a salvage yard TCM from a dodge 1500 that had a 5.7 hemi, as far as the TCM goes. If you're going larger tires, I'd suggest going to 4.11 (or higher) gears first if you're going off-roading with it.

First don't drive with overdrive on if you are. Next perhaps just change the engine tune to hot tune this used to cost $50 not sure now. But the real problem is it takes a lot more power to turn the larger diameter tires and if you want more low end power you will have to give up high end power or make engine more powerful which could also include different turbo very expensive. the other choice that loses high end economy is the gear change coronado suggested as alternative.

Actually the simplest thing is go back to lower diameter tire. Also the weight of the tire wheel combination would likely be less. Overall the higher diesel torque does pretty well at low end even with larger tires , in my case 32.1 inch diameter with aluminum wheels takeoffs from sahara model CJ. If takeoff speed is what you are after change tires or the gear ratio.

I’m currently running the GDE eco tune, stock 3.73 gears, hemi TCM, and 32 inch tires.
Yeah, it takes a little more effort to get it moving but it does great off road and it’s not a race car.
For the most part, I drive with OD-off until I get above 50mph.

Oh, and your only option for TCM tuning is GDE right now.

Hot tune will help for sure. I do have 4.10’s now as well but kinda regret it because of the extra rpm on the freeway.

the jeep I drive regularly has 2 1/2 inch lift 32.1 inch tires hot tune hemi torque converter 1 inch wheel spacersand stock 3.73 gears and GDE trans economy tune. I actually still drive in overdrive all the time unless pulling trailer or sometimes with very strong headwind say 30 mph. Still have decent acceleration but definitely not real quick. In mud will spin all four mud loaded tires. I don't do rock climbing but hard for me to imagine that it wouldn't be able to raise its own weight with the torque it has and again one could always put smaller diameter tires or change gear ratio.

You could also sell the eco trans tune with exchange and then buy the power tune but it isn't like GDE in past not to swap the tunes for a much less fee, I am surprised at this.

Can you compensate for axle ratio changes? I have your eco trans tune and it seems that when i swapped to 4.10’s my shift points also move. 5th lockup now happens ~54mph.

Does the transmission tune help with the jarring shift ~20mph? Everything I have read says it is a software issue so I am thinking maybe this would help?

Mine smoothed things out for sure. The big one I noticed is when you downshift to engine brake from 5th using the OD-off button or shifting to 2nd is much smoother.

In a perfect world, we could have that axle in our CRD to validate changes. If you are very specific in speed, gear, and rpm at every shift, we could try a custom bench tune to optimize shifts.

Thats great news. Yes, I had a string of emails going to your support and never heard back on the price of a swap. In a few weeks when I know that it will not snow anymore, Ill get the unit sent in unless there is an option to rent the programmer.

According to the calculator that I used, When you change from 3.73 and 225/75-16 tires to 4.10 and 265/75-16 tires there is only 30 RPM difference at 65 MPH.. 1863-1893 RPM and that seems like a plus to help turn the heaver tires with little impact on your fuel mileage

You're right, it is. It basically returns you back to the stock effective gearing(3.73's+stock tires).

That said, I don't really enjoy driving at the speed limit(80 mph around here) and having to listen to the engine spin away at 2400+ rpm. It was perfectly capable of turning these tires with 3.73 gears and would be ~250 rpm lower.
