Saw a post on this site mentioning that a piston can be removed without pulling the engine. Is this bogus or not?! Trying to get this slowly done in the driveway. Also, is it possible that the cylinder line can just be rehoned rather than replaced?! The last owner said it was only driven a short distance after the piston and head went south.
The port in the bellhousing is on the driver's side above the starter, there is a rubber plug there. You can rotate the engine to get the 4 torque converter bolts to appear and remove them - then the (IIRC) 7 or 8 bellhousing bolts into the transmission and the engine will be ready to remove, the only other main attachments are the two engine mounts.
You WILL need to remove the engine from the body to remove the pan and get the piston out. Doing this in a driveway is rough but it can be done.
