Saw a post on this site mentioning that a piston can be removed without pulling the engine. Is this bogus or not?! Trying to get this slowly done in the driveway. Also, is it possible that the cylinder line can just be rehoned rather than replaced?! The last owner said it was only driven a short distance after the piston and head went south.

Oil pan cannot be removed unless your drop the whole front cradle out from under the engine. :(

The port in the bellhousing is on the driver's side above the starter, there is a rubber plug there. You can rotate the engine to get the 4 torque converter bolts to appear and remove them - then the (IIRC) 7 or 8 bellhousing bolts into the transmission and the engine will be ready to remove, the only other main attachments are the two engine mounts.

You WILL need to remove the engine from the body to remove the pan and get the piston out. Doing this in a driveway is rough but it can be done.

Easiest way to remove the pan is drop the cradle as billwill said. I used threaded bar screwed into the cradle mounting bolt holes to lower and raise the cradle. I did not disconnect the steering shaft but did unbolt the rack from the cradle I recall. Still put a bit of a strain on the steering shaft. A hell of a lot less work than pulling the engine to remove sump. I am not a magician so anyone can use this method.

Correction to last post. The comment was from wwdiesel and not billwill
