Anyone have any good tips on installing the cam/valve cover onto the head? I have done it a few times and I always seem to knock off a rocker or two a few times before I can finally get it. I'm currently rebuilding the engine after a valve failure and I'm getting close to finally buttoning it up.

You can look at number 9 on following link rest may or may not be of interest.

In a nutshell, get bolts similar to valve cover bolts and long enough to bring heads off and still protrude through installed valve cover just screw in hand tight then use these as guides to keep valve cover in correct position. You cannot make them too long or you will have trouble clearing the firewall. Easier if you put in center holes maybe the ones near first and third injector holes. Remove the guide bolds by hand or with fingers, needle nose or pliers etc.

Hope this helps. It has worked for me 4 times now.

I used four 2" long pieces of 1/2" grey plastic electrical conduit as spacers between the head and intake.

Made some pins too as described above. Started with a pin in the #1 injector clamp hole until the intake was resting on the spacers. A little extra wiggle room while dealing with the weight. Then I moved the pin to the intake cover bolt hole in front of the #1 injector and another pin somewhere near the #3 cylinder. With a light you can see every rocker when it's resting on the spacers.

A dab of assembly lube between the valve stem and rocker helps keep them from moving.

I tried various things like made wedges to put in from sides and gradually slide them out etc. With the bolts its hard not to get it correct

Thanks I'll give these a try. I should have some old valve cover bolts laying around somewhere that I can repurpose.
