So I am once again doing another rocker job on another rig... this must make 50 or so... an how, this guy drove it for the last 2 years with poor mileage and excessive smoke and then finally the popping in the intake and he sold it to me. So I pulled the rocker cover and put it back together. When I went to spin it over to retighten the timing tensioner and check timing it wouldn't turn all the way over, so I checked my timing again and it was on so I removed the rocker cover and checked to see if one fell off during install and all was good. So I turned it over with the cover off and again it wouldn't turn all the way over, it would spin about 340 degrees either direction. So to investigate, witch puzzled the hell out of me since this was a routine job and I drove the thing in, I pulled the head. There was a LOT of carbon piled up in cyl 3, so much so that you could see where it had been compressed when the piston came up. It must have dropped loose from the head and piled up just right when I blew the hole out after pulling the injector. Long story short it was yet another learning lesson.

I’ve had two of these cases. It seems if they drove awhile with a bad rocker the carbon builds up at the top of the cylinder and doesn’t allow it to rotate by hand. First time I was puzzled. Second time I knew and had to tell the customer I have to go deeper and would be more money

Good info!
Really drive homes the reason to never to continue to run an engine knowing there is a problem that can cause poor combustion which causes carbon buildup along with possible washing of the cylinder wall from unburned fuel.

What are the signs of a bad rocker? I see a lot of posts of people replacing the rockers by 150k miles.

The best part is he added a power puck and ran it for a while turned up to "help" with the lack of power but he said he didn't notice any diffrence... Lol, yea just throw more fuel at it that will help for sure...

I have another jeep I think will be the same so I am going to hook the shop vac to the injector holes and blow from the glow plug holes to clean it out and see if that fixes it.

Generally some loss of power , black smoke in exhaust, poor mileage. Eventually running rough , more lack of power, worse mileage and spitting and spurting. There are probably others I haven't mentioned.
