So I’m thinking about buying a Liberty CRD with 133k miles. I’ve done two Cummins conversions but just don’t that much about this engine. Two things about this vehicle concerned me. Light to heavy diesel smoke under WOT and a fair amount just cruising down the road. After the thing was warmed up I took the oil cap off and put the palm of my hand over the opening to feel for blow by. I ended up with black oil all over the palm of my hand. I wasn’t breathing as bad as a 6.4 powerstroke but it was close.

The smoke is probably from worn rockers or lack of boost and the reason for the high crank case pressure is that the vacuum pump vents to it. As far as the 6.4 Powerstroke I love that engine... The next best thing is the 6.0 Powerstroke ... Lots of money to be made trying to keep them both on the road...

To make it as reliable as you can with upgrades and probably fix the current problems you would most likely spend about $3000 and approximately 30 hours of labor. So if you are up for that I say go for it but factor that into whatever your purchase price is. You would also probably spend a lot more hours researching and learning the various peculiarities of this vehicles. Then there are the extras like engine and transmission tunes etc. Then the other upgrades like winches bumpers lifts tires etc.

Just a few things to address:
Lift Pump
ARP studs
Rockers
Exhaust valves
Head Gasket
Timing belt water pump
EGR delete
Boost/Intercooler hoses
Torque converter/front pump
