Oil leak!

Ok,

So I put a new turbo in this 05 along with new supply and return lines and fittings.

I have an oil leak that is coming from the rear of the engine above the turbo oil return line. It runs down the block and covers the oil filter.

This usually results in a puddle of oil around 2 inches in diameter after I run the jeep on the highway and idle for a minute or two for turbo cool down.

I do not have oil in the coolant nor coolant in the oil. Jeep does not use any coolant at all. The oil is not leaking from the CCV valve or any hoses. Has Provent and stage 2 egr delete.

Can the head gasket be leaking oil but not be failed internally?

The portion of the valve cover that I can inspect, all but the rear, looks fine.

Is there an oil line that goes into the back of the head that could be leaking?
I am out of ideas at this point.

Suggestions appreciated.

Hate to say it, but most likely it's the turbo. Either leaking at one of the banjo bolts, or the shaft seals.
Another possibility is the attachment of the compressor section or turbine section may have come loose.
The next place I would inspect is the turbo inlet and outlet hoses. Both places are common leakage areas.
If still nothing, the only remaining suspect is the Oil Cooler. Bolted to the block pretty much right beside the water pump.

None of the above.

The oil leak is coming from the back of the block above the turbo oil return line.

As additional info, the jeep had this same oil leak when I got it as the oil filter was covered black from the leak.

I also assumed that it was the turbo supply or return. So, I replaced those when I replaced the turbo and made sure there were no leaks coming from them.

There is no oil around the cooler.

So, this leak is not turbo related and, as I stated in my OP, is coming from the rear of the block, passenger side and possibly from the rear of the engine itself.

Possibility?
There are two cam seals on the back of the valve cover and three press in oil galley plugs similar to small freeze plugs.
Two on the back of the head, and one is on the rear passenger side of the block.
Oil could leak from any of these locations and run down the back of the engine and down onto the bell housing.

It sure answers some possibilities. I would bet dollars to donuts that the cam seals are to blame either from mileage or improper installation of the valve cover itself.

Looks like I'll have to remove the valve cover and check on the seals and plugs on the back of the engine.

It will be a good time to do rockers and ARP's I guess.

Have you considered adding some UV dye to the oil and then using a UV light to pinpoint the oil leak before disassembling the engines top half?
Add it to your oil and use a small UV flashlight and it will tell you exactly where the leak is coming from.
Many parts stores sell it and a light as well as being available online.
Good stuff for locating a leak! :wink:

Also, rather than re-using the timing belt, since it's coming off anyway, I'd suggest doing that as well.
Re-using them runs a very high risk of breakage.
No use fixing your oil issue, just to have the TB break soon after.

I may let the thing sit now. If the timing belt has to come off to pull the valve cover, this might be more than I want to chew off at this point.

I'll hang tight for a while and decide how I want to proceed.
