Hi ya'll! Thanks for this incredibly helpful website.

I've got a 2005 CRD with the GDE eco-tune. I have not done anything to the transmission control module, nor have I felt any shuddering. For peace of mind I was going to swap out the torque converter. I found the MOPAR RL037142AA at Rock Auto for a whopping $583.79 plus $100 core charge. I'm thinking maybe I don't really need peace of mind, after all.

How important is it that I switch it out? Is there another, cheaper source of a better torque converter?

Thanks!
Abeja

I would not worry about replacing it just yet if you are NOT experiencing any shudder or slippage when accelerating uphill and the transmission is in 5th gear with the torque converter locked up.
Some have reported having no issues with TC shudder with their OEM TC's. Others not so lucky experience it in 4th and 5th in lockup when accelerating uphill.
Some also choose to live with the shudder for a while by simply backing off the go pedal when it starts slipping. This can be done for a while to baby it until you are ready to fix it for good.
Mine started slipping just as soon as I reflashed the ECM and started raising HP and torque, so I replaced it with the SunCoast TC. Never slipped again even with 4k loads behind it.

If you want a very good torque converter, one of the very best is the SunCoast. http://www.suncoastdiesel.com/
You have to call them on the phone as they no longer list their TC for the Jeep Liberty CRD on their website, but they still build them.
The are not cheap, but they are good. :juggle:

Florida Torque Converter is another one that some have installed and reported very good results and they are only $196.00 + $40.00 core charge.

Some just simply buy a TC for the Dodge Hemi truck and install it. Different stall speeds but it seems to work pretty good according to reports on this forum.
Lots of reading about this one and others on this forum, just search.

Like WW said

if you don't experience shudder , just keep it like that.

If you plan to go with a more performance tune, the Mopar ( euro spec ) would be my last choice.

Florida and Suncoast makes excellent TC .

If on a budget get the Hemi TC.

Also make sure your trans is good and have the updated front pump.

Good point! I forgot to mention that,
If you R&R the transmission for a new TC or for any other reason, be sure and install a new updated front pump assembly and add a TransGo kit.

I have three with the Hemi and one with Euro chrysler one. I personally would go with the Florida or the Suncoast if I was doing one tomorrow

THANKS for all the advice. I know there's more somewhere on this site, but it's so dense! I searched "torque converter" and didn't find all this excellent info.

(:
