The kit comes with two different pins. Does it matter who goes where?

I had all 3 pins in but the exhaust cam was about 1/2 a tooth away from the make left from the other person. I installed it in the same position as I removed it.

Something has got to be off though. I’m going to tear it back apart and check everything with the pins.

Thank you all for the support, things are getting dark over here.
Garrett

Intake cam pin engaged 5 teeth cw of where I had set it before. I am concerned that I may have wrecked my new rockers....
After I installed the t belt I rolled it over by hand 3 revs and I didn’t feel or hear anything. I’m staying hopefull.
Garrett.

Marks on the cam sprockets are useless.
What matters is that intake cam pin, exhaust cam pin, and crank pin all go in.
The pins are your timing marks.
All three have to line up.

Did you properly torque the sprockets to the cams?

5 teeth make a lot of difference!
She fired right up but my tbelt tensioner is grinding and squealing like a stuck hog. This is a new one that came with “the kit”. Do I order a new one or used the old one?

Wow I feel better..

Cam sprockets were torqued to 80 ft/#

You really need to pin both camshafts and the crank to get the timing exactly where it should be and it would be extremely difficult to get the timing exactly right by any witness marks you make. You can get very close but you would almost have to be lucky to get it right without pinning the cams and crank simultaneously. There is a witness mark for the crank at 90 degrees ATDC and it works out where one of the holes on crank is pointed just slightly clockwise from straight up. There is also mark on injector pump . The cam gears are not easy to accurately mark. Here is a link to homemade pins using a couple of bolts and don't bother with making the crank hole pin, just use an appropriate size allen wrench and you could use a drill bit or something similar sized or possibly a punch to get close on the cam pins.
http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html

here is a link to the factory service manual if you haven't found it.
http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/

There are also numerous write-ups of other mods etc from notes supplied by papaindigo ( Jim Stoutamir ?spelling) under the Jeep CRD tech tips section

So pin crank at 90 ATDC on passenger side where bell housing attaches and the two cam pin holes on side of valve cover and when all three of these line up and injector mark at mark you have it.

They don't line up on every revolution the cams and crank line up every 2 revs, I think the injector pump lines up every 3 can't remember for sure so it may take 6 revs to get them all to line up at same time

I would use a new belt tensioner thats what is recommended especially if it is making any funny noises and make sure to recheck the tension notch position after running and reset if needed.

Marks? Timing is not set based on marks. There is a mark on the crankshaft for TDC on #1, but that must be rotated to the 3 o'clock position to make it 90 ATDC. The camshafts are set based on PINS, the camshaft pulley marks mean exactly nothing.

Thank you all,
I’ve been trying to think back, is there a recommended brand of tensioner? If not I’ll get one from FAPS.

She fired up on the first hole after retiming it.

Experts, do you know if there is a difference in between the lobes on these cams? For example, on cylinder one, does one one intake valve open before the other? I am worried that being that far out of time I may have introduced my valves to the pistons. At the same time I’m thinking, if it would have, it would have broken all the intake unless there is just enough difference between the timing of the two valves that it only broke on on each hole. Might try to borrow a bore scope.

Thank you all,
Garrett.
