I am looking for a new thermostat, and saw that Slant sells one under their name for our CRDs. Don't know how to find out who really makes these (seller had no idea) and I thought I would ask here. Anyone know anything about these thermostats or have any experience with them?

OEM type. There is a seller on ebay who has them, but when I asked if they knew the manufacture, all they could tell me is Slant (which I sort of doubt that Slant would go to the trouble of producing this casting for a vehicle with so few numbers).

Are you referring to the STANT Corporation, which has the following website...

http://www.stant.com/index.php/english/home/

And which has the following contact information...

http://www.stant.com/index.php/english/contact-us/

???

OR...

Is this some kind of fly-by-night company using a name, (SLANT) that sounds almost exactly like STANT. This is deliberately done by some companies hoping to cash in on the reputations of legitimate, reputable companies while delivering substandard products or services. BE CAREFUL!

ALSO...

Why are you even considering an O.E. thermostat assembly, which is a throwaway part and has to comply with EPA regulations in North America? EPA NOx regulations require a thermostat valve inside the O.E. assembly that is almost 20 degrees colder than the same type thermostat assembly used in CRD engines in other markets around the world. The North American O.E. thermostat has a 176 degree valve inside, and the same O.E. type thermostat assembly has a 195 degree valve for all other markets around the world. Heck, even 195 degrees is too cool in my book; 176 degrees is terrible, and greatly contributes to the clogged out CRD engines in the U.S. and Canada.

The stant 50388 uses a 188 degree valve. It doesn't appear to be available on rock auto anymore like mentioned in the post linked below. That's where I got mine, but I havent installed it yet. Folks on lost report good results with them, but I do recall one post where it's performance was suspect. I also recall one post where it was claimed that the housing was not made by crown.

I would be wary of anything other than original equiptment molar thermostat and yes it will likely only last 3 to 5 years and is a pain to change. The thermostat Jeff (TDFreak) sells is very high quality and you would only have to install once. It is highly thought of by members and has replaceable valve that is easily changed if necessary. Only drawback for many is cost. You may recover some of the cost in less fuel cost over time. If I had the budget for one I would definitely get Jeff s

I personally would not get one of the other aftermarket ones and the "SLANT" not "STANT" fooled me initially in your post.

If STANT made one I would consider it along with OEM.

"STANT" Thermostat:
UPC: 333421700564
Manufacturer Part Number: 50388
Stant still lists them in the "Part Finder" section of their web site.
https://partcat.com/stant

Plenty of them online, just not sure of their validity. :google:

I've been running that Stant housing now for a couple of years now with no issues. I trust the brand. Install is straightforward, the hardest part being removing the old gasket material from the head. Just take it easy and be careful not to gouge the aluminum. I did consider the housing the member here sells but at 10x the price I just couldn't justify it for a vehicle this age.

I suspect the ebay seller has simply made a typo.

I have no opinion about any thermostat sold on Ebay - BUT the question in this thread about "slant" versus "Stant" is probably just a spellcheck error or voice-to-text error.
I highly doubt there is a copycat company trying to manufacture a counterfeit "sound-alike" product for the CRD and banking on Stant's corporate reputation. There just aren't enough CRDs out there to make us a worthwhile market for something like that.

Talk about hearing hoofbeats and thinking of wildebeests....

There may not be a lot of CRDs here in North America, but I can guarantee you that there are more than 200 times as many R425 and R428 powered vehicles in other markets around the world; the numbers are probably in the millions by now. Counterfeit parts abound, geordi.

I caught someone posting a counterfeit online ad for the Hot Diesel Solutions Model 001 thermostat about 4 years ago. At that point in time I was only selling the Model 001 to North American CRD owners and I don't even have a website!!!

You do not even have to manufacture something to engage in fraudulent activity and ride on the coattails of another persons or company's success. You can simply claim to have a product that is the same or similar to what you are trying to emulate, get buyers to send money and then disappear without delivering anything.

I've seen many examples of this marketing strategy in the last few decades, but i haven't seen the one suggested here. I wouldn't dismiss it as impossible, though. Just a couple years ago there was a big cafluffle in Aus. about chinese made counterfeit ProVent units. There have been many more in other markets as well.

You are right about the knock offs!
There is a town in China called USA. Lots of parts come from there with the line "Made in USA" on the box. There have been brake pads sold in Australia in what look like genuine Toyota boxes that have been found to contain asbestos. There have been plenty of other examples. Organizations set up what looks like a company in America (USA) when they are actually Chinese based. You dont find out until the parts arrive & you see they have come via China post from main land China.

I've said on many occasions that given the opportunity to make a dollar on it and undercut our manufacturing... The Chinese would counterfeit a ham sandwich if they could make money.

Jeff - I know you are concerned about someone stealing your product. The fastest way to make that happen, is to have it manufactured in China. Those counterfeit Provent cans are flooding Amazon and Ebay even now, and for something like that.... I'm sorry to say that the fakes are probably going to win the market share b/c it just isn't that complicated a product.

It is on Provent if they moved their manufacturing to China, b/c that just gives the Chinese guaranteed access to the product to duplicate it. GM executives "expressed shock" at touring one of their new factories in China a couple years ago, and saw several 100% duplicates of Buick cars (which the Chinese love for some reason) running around with very much NOT GM name badges on them.

They were perfect copies, but were named something like GuangZoom 345 HR57 Q or something equally loony. GM sued... and China basically said "tough"

I would hope that with such a small niche for our rare short 2 year run of vehicles, it would not be very lucrative for them to reproduce most items solely for the Jeep CRD.
But one can never know what to expect from that part of the world!
You really have to be careful what you buy on line these days... Often times, the delivery date can be a dead giveaway.
