So we just picked up a 2006 CRD for a couple hundred bucks from scrap yard, it was rolled onto its side. It's been there for about a year. So we towed it home, put in some oil (it was empty) and bled the fuel lines/filter. As we were cranking it over it just stopped cranking and got the sound like the bendix in the starter wasnt engaging, could only hear whizzing noise. we took off the starter and tested it, it seemed fine, we then noticed that the flywheel can be spun very easily by hand. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am leaning toward a broken crank shaft but hoping someone may have have a better answer. Also, not sure if it matters or not but while cranking we accidentally gave it 16 volts of power rather than 12.
Thanks,

How are you turning the flywheel? Sounds like the flex plate is not attached to the crank. If it had a broken crank it would not turn over easy.

I am turning it with my fingers through the hole where the starter used to be, when turning by hand you can faintly hear a noise, almost like gurgle i guess you could call it. hard to explain

Sounds like the crank to flex plate adapter bolts sheared like mine did.
Regardless, drop the trans, your answer lies within.
