Recently bought a CRD and finally finished taking off the head today. #3 cylinder is trashed. Previous owner took it to a shop that didn't know what they were doing with the timing belt. They said that it was driven a short distance from the shop to driveway. It was really sluggish the next morning so they left it parked. They also realized that the oil pan had filled with water. Would the broken head be a reason for the water in the oil?! From the experience you all have had, is the engine worth rebuilding or is it cheaper to find a replacement?! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

if the parts where not so expensive yes rebuild option be ok ,, but NO , because ,,, say i can buy locally , 05 crd that been sitting on used lot for 2 years or more for say less then 3000 can dollars with 130000km all original , so just needs regular 100ooo mile service , so look for something like that be good donor engine for your jeep

Good used CRD engines are very hard to find.

Post some pictures of the engine damage so we can help guide you.

Yep, it does look bad but hard to tell how bad from the pics might help to clean off number 3 piston for us to see but you can probably tell pretty well if piston isn't actually cracked and can get crud off its possible it could be salvaged. Can you rotate the motor now ? looks like 3 is near top dead center now. BTW looks like it has studs on the valve cover like a weeks kit but also looks like egr still there on one pic I may be disoriented.

Mountain man has seen a lot of damaged engines, he and flash and others can give you more detailed information about sourcing and replacing liners piston matching pistons or not etc but if you are going to restore that one looks like you have your work cut out for you. You can get good used head and parts for reasonable price from VM specialists but unless replace all pistons as set would have to source old style I believe.

Good luck

Definitely gonna need a replacement head, piston, and maybe a cylinder liner

Where are you located? I have a spare engine that only needs a set of rockers.
May be cheaper to buy a good used engine rather than building a totally broken one. :juggle:

Thank you all for the advice, I thought it should just be head and cylinder/sleeve. I'm in VA. Engine does turnover now, one of the valves was wedged in the top preventing tdc earlier. I found an engine at a junkyard for 3200 and am trying to consider all options.

hm 3200 us dollars for used engine , that seems expensive, like i sad , local car lot has 2 crd jeeps one with 80,000miles runs good all original , needs windshield , tires , etc , 2nd one needs rockers runs bad , and its 100,000 miles , i bet if i can get them cheap ,because , nobody wants them , for some reason ??? maybe i go get some cash in my hand , maybe 2500 canadian dollars and try to get one with 80.000miles lol just for fun , i know they been siting for 2 years , hell you never know when valve can drop so be nice to have spare jeep .

While piling onto a mechanic is popular, this wasn't caused by the timing. This engine dropped a valve, while running and proceeded to kill two more valves in the same cylinder. Seen it plenty of times. Very likely the piston is cracked or at least severely damaged and a good possibility that the liner is also cracked.

Having sat for any significant length of time, water contamination of the main bearings is a real concern. That said - the water came from the failed head. There are water jackets everywhere in the head, and they frequently get punched when a valve separates.

If the engine will rotate completely now by hand, clean that piston with a wire wheel and see what you see on it and the liner. That will make a big difference in which way to go. If you want help in working on it, I'm the traveling CRD tech... Although it looks like you may be equipped to take this on yourself. You may not need to replace the entire engine, it IS designed to be rebuilt with new liners and pistons. You can get a head from England for about $400, and then replace all the valves in that so you know they are new. Then you need ARP studs, new head gasket, EGR deletes.... And you are getting close to having a running engine again.

Thanks a lot. So new piston and liner might take care of the bottom end then?! The engine was drained of oil and water soon after it all got crazy. I'll start looking around and pricing a path.

Any idea what the name of the manufacturer and model of the turbocharger that green diesel engineering sells? Also I'm wondering where the CDI engine comes from? what other vehicle was the 2.8 was used in?

As to the GDE turbo, Garrett

The VM Motori S.p.A. is an Italian diesel engine manufacturing company which is wholly owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles through its subsidiary Fiat Group Automobiles. VM headquarters and main production facilities are located in Cento, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

The VM Motori engine has and still is used today all over the world in many vehicles and different applications including boats, tractors, agricultural, stationary engines like generators, large trucks, industrial applications, etc.... the list is very long.
See this wikipedia list (it is NOT all inclusive):> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VM_Motori_engines

Sorry for the slow reply - Yes, it is POSSIBLE that all you may need is a piston and sleeve. But the engine will need to come out to remove the pan anyway - so when the rod cap (on the munched piston) is removed, you can inspect at least that set of rod bearing shells and see if they are damaged from either age or water contamination. If they are - then you can decide about replacing the rest of the rod bearings or the mains.

Pulling the sleeve is not hard, it is only held down by o-rings, gravity and corrosion. ;)

Thanks. Does anyone know how to remove the CP3 fuel pump?! I've removed the 3 retaining nuts but it will not budge, soaked in pb the last 2 weeks as well. Also, is there a plate or window to remove the bolts that connect the torque converter and flywheel for engine removal?! Thanks again for all the help.

See page 14 - 62 FUEL DELIVERY - 2.8L DIESEL in the FSM, it covers how to remove the injection pump.

Saw a post on this site mentioning that a piston can be removed without pulling the engine. Is this bogus or not?! Trying to get this slowly done in the driveway. Also, is it possible that the cylinder line can just be rehoned rather than replaced?! The last owner said it was only driven a short distance after the piston and head went south.
