Putting the crd back together, my mechanic tells me there is a balancer for the crankshaft, but it has no timing marks. Does it need to be timed? |

YES! There is a procedure in the service manual, I believe it involves a pin in the balance shafts. Putting this in without timing it WILL cause severe problems. |

Yes, it has to be timed or it will shake the engine all to pieces. See section 9 - page 246 in the 05 Factory Service Manual. As Geordi stated, it involves using a pin punch to index the balance shafts for proper alignment. You can view the Factory Service Manual online at:> http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/ 05 FSM:> http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/J ... Manual.pdf Review the FSM for the full procedure and information! This is part of what it says: NOTE: Before installation of the balance shaft assembly, the # 1 cylinder must be brought to TDC, or the 12 O’clock position. There is a line on the front of the crankshaft hub, next to the front crankshaft bolt, that may assist the alignment. (1) Remove the vibration damper and roll engine over by hand until the witness line on the front of the crankshaft hub is at the 12 O’clock, or TDC position. Once the # 1 cylinder is brought to TDC, the balance shaft assembly can be installed. CAUTION: CARE MUST BE TAKEN DURING THE INSTALLATION OF THE DRIFT OR PUNCH. THE BACK SIDE OF THE COUNTER WEIGHTS ON THE BALANCE SHAFTS MUST BE IN THE UP POSITION BEFORE INSERTING THE TOOL INTO THE HOUSING. (2) With balance shaft assembly on work bench. Insert a drift of a punch into balance shaft assembly alignment hole. This will ensure proper balance shaft to crankshaft timing after assembly (Fig. 156). (3) Install the new crankshaft carrier pin O-rings, balance shaft assembly and retaining bolts. Torque bolts to 32.4N·m (24 ft. lbs.), and remove the punch from the alignment hole. |

Thanks for the info I will forward this to him, he has the timing tool that I got from sasquatch, and has done the timing belt before. |

After the local Jeep Dealers here re-built my 2002 Export CRD I picked the Jeep up and after a short drive I returned it to the Dealers as the engine was running very rough! When I picked up the Jeep a few days later it was nice and smooth. The Manager said that the counter-balancers had two options of where the alignment pin could be inserted...one for the 2.5 Export Model as I have and another slot for the 2.8 Export CRD which came out in 2003 here in SA. They had used the 2003 slot! Fortunately your 2005/2006 USA/Canada models should only have the 2.8 L slot available! ![]() |
