Hi guys,

I'm just getting ready to put my cylinder head back on and realized I was missing the rear drain pipe for the water pump (5072703AB). I managed to locate this part but looking at the back of the water pump I noticed I do not have a hole for this pipe (it appears it still connects but no hole).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/nsr87n7xtcmkkvg/rear%20water%20pump%202.jpeg?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/iwn0ujm3et03o2d/waterpump%20.jpg?dl=0

Why is this? Did they delete the rear drain hole for some reason?

I am not clear on your issue. The water pump doesn't need to be removed to replace the head.
If you removed this part then there should be a place to replace it.
If you didn't remove the part then apparently you didn't have it.

The pics are good and I viewed them but doesn't really help me see what you are talking about. Perhaps a labeled picture would help.

Hi,

Here is an updated photo, as you can see the port on the back of my water pump is blocked off like it was never drilled out.

OK, I understand now. Yes, I guess you could have the port drilled or machined out but there are no moving parts in the rear portion of the water pump. This is why the rear portion is generally not removed any more with timing belt service etc. The only moving part (the impeller portion) is on front part and along with o ring is replaced without disturbing the rear housing and really only reason to remove the rear portion would be if the o ring that connects to engine was leaking.

I am so confused.

Why are you expecting a hole to be there?
There is no need for one.

According to the diagram, pipe #8 (5072703AB) connects to the back of my water pump.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8fu9tq445tch00/resource.png?dl=0

My rear water pump housing has VM on it but no hole

The diagram you are posting does not appear to be for a US Jeep CRD. The oil cooler is missing!
Don't believe our Jeeps use the hole you are referencing.
Apparently it is used on some non US models that do not have the oil cooler in the location right behind the water pump like ours.

Ooough!

It's not just that the oil cooler is missing, in that sketch he's showing, the block is designed to use the German-Style "pancake" oil cooler that threads on between the block and the oil filter. (Side of the block, Below the pump)

IIRC old Audi 5cyl turbodiesels (100? 200? 5000?), and (I think) early Jetta 1.6L turbodiesels used that type, along with a funky 3-way molded rubber coolant hose.

It's a different burro altogether, and would need an extra water pump inlet of some sort.

So are we to assume that Mr JeepLovR is working with a 2.5/2.8L European spec engine?

Or is JeepLovR simply looking in the wrong book?

Interesting, I do remember having a metal pipe that was shaped like 5072703AB. My wife "cleaned up" and threw out the old hoses with the metal connectors still attached
So now I'm trying to figure out what I need for coolant lines/connectors.

That, I don't know.

Either is possible I suppose, but the sketch definitely shows a spin-on type casting where the oil cooler should be, and it lit up some long-disused and abandoned memory synapses. I've only seen that type on German vehicles, but they could be used on older Italian types as well. I've not seen them used on anything OEM since late 70's or very early 80's and they were troublesome for oil seepage, as I remember.

Gordo, that looks like a nightmare just waiting to happen! Leaks that is. :grim:

Our oil cooler coolant flow enters from a port in the block, the coolant flow exits the cooler and goes straight into the large suction pipe on the back of the water pump. The non-used port JeepLovR is referencing is on the discharge side of the water pump and would be needed for a sandwich type oil cooler as described.
Thank goodness we do not have such an animal on our Jeeps...

Yeah, I was never a fan of this sandwiched cooler system. With all the known OEM weaknesses we address at it is, I"m glad we don't have that as well.

Short of a dry-sump / air-stack oil cooler system, I'll stick with what it has.

Oooh interesting, glad I have the US/Canada model :P

So is there a type of metal pipe that looks like this (curved like a "C") in the coolant lines somewhere? Or was I just smelling too much coolant :P

If you have the domestic model, then that sketch is not correct for your application, and as far as I know there is no need for that port to exist, hence the confusion. :banghead:

JeepLovR

There is a metal tube that exits the rear of the water pump.
It has several hoses coming from it including an attachment to the lower radiator hose and the oil cooler.
If you have a metal tube that attaches to the rear of the water pump and the lower radiator hose then you have the only metal tube (it also attaches to other things) if you don't you will need to get it and may have one, here is a pic showing connection of the metal pipe we are supposed to have to the water pump on our US model CRD s

Water Pump Suction Pipe or "C" pipe as you are calling it.
