I recently had to use the “emergency shift lock release” on my buddy’s car. It seems most automatic transmissions have a hidden button you can press if the electric lock won’t allow you to shift out of park when the engine is on and the brake is depressed.

It took a while to locate, so I thought I’d find the one on my Liberty (‘06 CRD) now, before I need it. I couldn’t find it anywhere, and no reference to one in the owner’s manual either. Does the Jeep not have one? Anybody know?

Thanks, and apologies if there is already a thread about this, but I searched and came up with nothing.

It is all mechanical on the Jeep Liberty. No electronics involved.

In an extreme emergency, you could go under the Jeep, unhook the cable from the transmission and move the lever into R,N, D, 2, 1. But I would not want it to be running when I crawled under to do this!!!!!!!!!

Or remove the plastic covering the steering column and disconnect the end of the interlock cable at the ignition switch.

The easiest way is to pop the cover by the shifter, it’s either silver or black and on the 05-07 it housed the window switches. Look on the forward left corner and you will see the cable, now pop it out of the slot with your fingers and walla you just disconnected the shift interlock. Now when you push the shifter button and try to shift it, reach down the right side in the middle where the metal rod ratchets in the detents at the bottom and move it with your finger. Now the shift interlock won’t bother you again... and it can be done with no more than the mechanics trusty friend, the pocket screwdriver. I know I recently had to rescue my dad when his acted up

Thanks everybody. Hopefully I’ll never need it, but it’s nice to know.
